Just saw this thread. Nice idea!

Some libraries have 'pattern boxes' where you can leave a pattern or get a pattern (all for free, of course) but mine doesn't.

I recently convinced a good friend that her thrift shop was doing themselves a disservice by dumping the old patterns in the trash! Occasionally they would put some out for free. They just didn't realize the appeal of old patterns to a sewist.

Back to the topic, how will the list work? Who pays postage?

When I started the group, I envisioned it like my husband's music trading site. Each person has a list of their music, and when you see something you like, you email the person and say "hey, I want that, check out my list and see if there is anything you'd like to trade for". At PatternTrade you can simply search for posts by a particular person and see all the patterns they have to offer. In the case of the music, the person who initiated the trade pays for postage, but I figure patterns cost far less than discs to send and each person would just drop the package in the mail.

I am trying to get the word out for this group, so I urge everyone to please be patient Hopefully after a few months or so we'll have a "searchable"-sized list of patterns!

i did put this as a suggestion to PR some time back, but I figured I'd just get the ball rolling. If PR adopts it, even better!

Way back in 2002 or so, PatternReview had a "pattern barter". Actually, it was the precursor to the current Classifieds.

I don't think there was much action there, probably because it's sometimes hard to find someone who has the pattern you want.

Nevertheless, I've had some very nice experiences trading on the Classifieds here. Once, I traded a random Kwik Sew pattern from my collection, for a favorite that someone else was offering. Another time, I traded a pattern--I think it was a designer Vogue or something--for an old "classic" Threads magazine issue.

Unfortunately, you can no longer create a classified ad on PR, even for free patterns or trades, unless you pay for a FOPR membership. And you're not allowed to post trades or free patterns on the message boards.
