I know what I am doing this summer.. (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

Hi, I just wanted to post that my mom is finally moving out of her ridiculously big four bedroom three full bathroom house very soon.
I have to admit that I am really relieved that this is finally happening. She lives south of San Francisco on the coast side- El Granada(near Half Moon Bay). As far as her safety, I feel so much better that she will not be in a large two story house anymore(no more tile floors) , and that she will not need to take any more big drives to San Mateo or Palo Alto to go to her doctor or go shopping.
She will be moving closer to two of my older brothers- in Santa Rosa. The development where she is moving looks really nice. It is a retirement community with all kinds of good activities/ clubs. I hope that she decides to meet some new people. It is a really big deal since the last time she moved was in 1976, with my father and myself.

That's great! I hope she likes her new place. You did not say how old she is, but it does sound like you've been concerned about her safety in her old home.
For the elderly, or soon-to-be-elderly, a safe, independent home (as opposed to nursing home or assisted living) should be set up so that the potential for falling is minimized. Falls in the elderly are the most common, preventable cause of hospitalizations and disability, even death (20% of hip fractures result in death within the first few months).
Homes for the elderly should have the following characteristics, ideally:
single level, without steps, with ramps or with elevators if not at ground level;
wide doorways (in case a wheelchair or scooter becomes necessary);
flat floor or single level carpeting with no throw rigs or thresholds;
nightlights (to aid vision at night);
in the bathroom: grab bars that are anchored to studs, higher toilet seats, showers that aren't bathtubs (bathtubs are harder to get in and out, easier to get hurt if you slip), and shower chair/seat or room to put one in if it becomes necessary.
Hopefully, the place your mom is moving will have these set up, but most of these are easily added if it doesn't have them already, and they are not very expensive compared to a hospitalization or ER visits for injuries from falling.

Thanks Fictionfan! My mom is 87 and is really tiny- very slim (100#s) and 5'4". Before my father died from melanoma, my brother installed the bars in the bathroom. I hope to go check out and see her new place before she moves into it. I am really glad that it is a single level home, with two bedrooms and one bath. I think that it has a shower stall. I just hope that it is not too warm for her. Especially due to the wildfires that have been going on out here in CA.
Thank you for mentioning about the nightlights. She has a tendency to wander in the dark and not use them. I will make sure to buy some for her and put them into the kitchen bathroom and the hallways.

I suggest that you look for the kind of nightlights that are light/dark sensitive so they will go on automatically. That way she doesn't have to remember to turn them on. In my area, this kind of nightlight is hard to find.

Buy the light sensitive night lights that go on by themselves when the light level dims to a certain point. Then you will know they are on when your mom needs them. We had one in the bathroom which turned out to be significantly important. Consider what might happen if she were to try sitting in the dark and miss, especially when she is unfamiliar with her new home.
Will your mom have assistance hanging pictures? When we brought my mom to a retirement facility near us, DH helped Mom choose wha pictures to hang and seeing those particular images always made it feel like home.
You and your sibs are very lucky that your mom made the decision before it had to be made. Do be sure to go over the security program with the community manager or whoever does that. See if you can psych out how your mom might use the features that are available for her care. We had to remind mom that she was paying for the service whether she used it or not so she ought to use it when she did need help.
Wishing you and yours much luck in this transition!

If you can't find them with the regular nightlights, check with the child safety items--that's where we found ours.

Hi Jennifer,
My mum moved two years ago after living in the same huge house since 1977. She went from 3000sf/ft to about 2000sq/ft, and is much closer to town. I had thought she woud leave the old house feet first, but she is glad she made the move.
Of course it meant that I had to pick up all my junk that she had stored for a decade or more!

Isn't that the truth. I have found a reasonable storage place for the things that DH and I have accumulated over the years. The next stage- go through everything and eliminate the chafe!

I too am very happy to hear this for you and your Mom. DH and I will be faced with the same someday with his Mom. She will be 85 this month, and I'm nervous all the time about her.
This is a great thing and a huge stress reliever.
