Okay, pants Divas – now I am stumped! Just where does one measure for the low hip when buying pants patterns?

I ask this question because I have 2 old copies of Threads (from the 1990’s) and they both have articles on pants. One author is Sandra Betzina and I can’t remember the other author’s name – but both of them show the low hip measurement below the fanny at the top of the thigh.

Last night at Jo-Ann’s, I checked the Big 4 catalogs and they show the measurement for the low hip across the fanny - 7-9 inches down from the waist. However, Burda’s diagram shows the low hip measurement at the top of the thigh below the fanny.

My thigh measurement is 2 inches less than my fanny measurement. If it is the top of the thigh, then this changes things for me because I would need to go down another size – maybe that is why Burda has always been too big for me.

Any and all thoughts are appreciated!

I'm not sure what you mean by *low* hip.

The hip measurement should be taken where you are the widest below the waist. Patterns typically put this width 7-9 inches below the pattern waist. Most women have a different waist-hip length and need to adjust patterns accordingly, usually by adding/subtracting at the sideseams as necessary.

To add to Debbie's comment, sometimes, particularly as women age, the upper hip, which can be 2 or 3" down from the waist is bigger than the full hip in which case you would use this measurement.
