I was wondering as I look at all the sewing machine out there and their features. Is there a difference in say Bernina vs Janome or Viking vs Plaff. Are straight stitches and stitch quality better on the swiss made machines than the other makers. Or is it just a matter of personal preference. I see Elna makes a 9500 that is very similar to the Janome 11000. Would it sew better. Do the older metal machines sew better than the new machines with plastic parts.

Some machines are better than others, but ultimately, I think it's a matter of personal preference. In my lifetime, I've owned machines by four different manufactures - and I've loved each and every one of them. Some manufacturers sell one machine under two different brand names. I believe Elna and Janome are made by the same manufacturer. If you buy a machine you love from a reputable dealer, you should not go wrong.

Sew on them and find what you LOVE!!! It sounds silly, but all feel differently. You will like the feel of one better than the others. Choose that one because it is the machine you will enjoy. You will want to sew on it!!

I always tell people that sewing machines are like cars. They're all made differently, some will hold up better than others, some are made better than others, and they all (hopefully) get us where we want to go. Brand preferences & loyalties among sewing machines are just like cars. There's a whole range out there from the Yugo-type cars to the Toyota Camry, and the Lexus and Maserati types.

ETA - same goes for dealer/warranty support!

I believe Elna and Janome are made by the same manufacturer.

They are, Baby Lock and Brother are also. Baby Lock being the better company as Elna is to Janome. All four are very good company's that do make good machines.
