Wanting a wider leg (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

I have a pattern made from RTW for capri length yoga tights that form fit to the leg like these and I want to make them into a wider leg pant more like these except capri length, of course.
This is the pattern piece I use here
I think I will need to add some space mostly on the back side of the leg, but also feel I should probably slit where the side seam normally would be and add some there, right? It would not be a huge deal if I mess it up as I got that lovely piece of purple lycra/cotton super cheap at the thrift store today, but it would be nice if they worked on the first try.
I love purple.

Are you familiar with the concept of tissue fitting?
This seems like the perfect place to do that!
Make the alterations to the pattern, then pin it together and try it on. That'll let you see how wide the leg ends up, and if it's wide evenly all the way around. :)

Yes, I would make a tissue copy of my original, cut that up and see what happens. I usually have a heck of a time with tissue ripping and generally being miserable to deal with but I guess I should just suck it up and do it.

Yes, add to where the side seam would be as well as the inseam would be a good plan. Measure with the tape measure loose around where you want the hem to hit, so you know your target hem size, measure down the side seam position on you for length, divide the diff. between the existing hem and desired hem between the inner and outer seam. Alternatively, use a pants pattern which is close to the look you want, change the length and but the side seams up if you want a fold here instead of a seam. The pants in the second photo look as though they flare out at the bottom, and you'd need a side seam to do that.

I don't actually tissue-fit with tissue paper. It does rip & tear WAY too easily!
I use something called 'pattern-ease' I think from JoAnn's. It's in the interfacing section. There's a sturdier version, and a gridded version that's a bit lighter-weight, and drapes better.
If I have to really tug and try the pattern on and off a lot, I use the sturdier stuff, otherwise I use the gridded one.

A pattern for tights can be quite different from a yoga pants type pattern. Along with the obvious width difference the tights usually have a much shorter crotch length and extension to achieve that snug fit. You might compare the tights pattern to a regular pants pattern to see what you think.

I remembered some old knit I had and made 2 muslins last night. Sometimes I wonder why I seem to like to work this way rather than just finding a pattern and working from it, like you say. Liz. Of course, now I am getting fairly close to getting them the way I want, I don't feel like starting over, but I'll have to pop into the thrift store for more fabric today.
The first muslin was still too close to the leg for what I want and the second had too much fabric on the back of the leg - it wrapped around the inner leg and looked a bit odd. So I've added more to the side seam area and more to the front of the leg. The rise does feel a bit short, but that may just be because I have a 2 way stretch fabric rather than 4 way. It should be a fairly easy thing to fix. Wish me luck!
