The dress I'm making calls for underlining and china silk is suggested. I'm already deviating from the suggested dress fabrics of linen and wondering if I could use one of Joann's silky prints under the doubleknit or should I go with some type of stretch lining?

I think I'd stick with a knit. Not to mention, those Silkies are plain evil in terms of the static they seem to generate...not so good for a lining!

Whenever I underline/line a knit (I do this often) I buy Joann's swimwear lining. It's actually the one knit they carry that I LIKE. It's insanely expensive at $15/yd, but with a coupon it's tolerable. Not as pretty as a patterned Silkie, but it's very soft and holds up well.

If you have changed the material that much to a double knit, I wouldn't bother to underline it. It shouldn't need it.

I'll second what Eve said: avoid those @#$% silky prints. A black plastic garbage bag would work better and be more comfortable. As Nancy said, skipping the lining is definitely an option when working with a knit; if you decide that something is needed underneath the finished dress, dig out one of those charming, retro garments we used to call "slips."
