what to do when inspiration flies away (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

I can't work out why I'm not cutting out and sewing any one of the zillion projects hanging around. Or why I haven't photographed and reviewed the ones I've done. I'm still reading about everyone elses work, and avidly looking up fabrics and gadgets, but lassitude has set in to the sewing room. Anyone else get this? what do you do to jump start?

I was just thinking, as I turned on my laptop for the 85th time this afternoon, "My sewing mojo, she has left..." I had three days off and big plans - none of which I have accomplished.
Usually reading about sewing will do it, but the day got away from me!
Looking forward to some direction ...

When that happens to me (and it does) I usually shift my focus to something entirely different to give my sewing brain a breather.
I'll get a project done around the house, crochet, bake or catch up on errands. There are a gazillion projects I can do with my kids. Simply taking a break for a few days or a week or two freshens my sewing creativity.

A bad day in the sewing room is better than a good day at the office.

I'm throwing out UFO's...even some good ones. They aren't appetizing to me anymore. I need to move on. I need to cut more fabric. Get out of the guilt of UFO's...that's my thinking.

Do something easy. I was in a serious sewing slump for a while after failing to fit the twins...again.
So, I made some pillowcases. I made three sets and love them. After that, I started on a pair of pants. All I need to do now is finish the hem.
I wouldn't throw out the UFO's, yet. You may be inspired one day to finish them. I plan to return to mine and donate them to the Salvation Army.

When I get this way I like to clean my sewing room and organize things. I also do give away fabric I no longer want and pitch the ufo's that are haunting me. I also agree a fun quick project can do wonders. Sometimes I need to do a little computer "time out". If I'm not hooked up to the computer it is easier to into the sewing room. This to shall pass

Same as Kellie R. I switch to a different creative outlet. I'll papercraft or paint or do a home decor project. I've found that forcing myself to sew when I'm not "into it" usually results in errors or sloppy construction.

Oh and definitely agree about letting go of the UFOs that just no longer speak to you. Why invest effort into something you just no longer believe in? You'll never wear it anyway. I've found that tossing some UFOs gives me "brain space" to tackle something I'm excited about. It's very liberating.

thanks for the replies. What I'm doing now is brainless 'organising' - cutting small pieces of fabric I never will actually use to make anything, but have saved anyway into binding strips. Its a chore to do this when you actually need binding, but quite relaxing as a passtime. jersey fabrics work best, because I don't need to bother with bias.
