Hi Everyone. I've drafted an eight gore skirt and I'm in the final stages. I've looked through all my sewing books to find how far apart I should place my buttons, but I haven't found any info. I'm considering two sizes: 3/4'' and 1/2''. Can anyone help me? Thank you!

Beth,
Could you explain a little bit - where are you planning to place buttons on your eight gore skirt? And how many? (I think of 6 and 8 gore skirts as being rather plain and can't quite picture where one might utilize multiple buttons, but am anxious to be inspired.) --Lily

Does this skirt button up the front or side? If so, you might want at least 2", maybe 2.5". You don't want them too close or it will shreek "happy hands at home". Do you happen to have a pattern for a button front dress? That would help with the spacing. Being at work, I am not able to check my stash.

Personally, I'd lay my buttons on the fabric and try different spacings until I found the one that had the best visual feel.

Be sure to place the first one exactly on the line of the greatest horizontal pull when you sit (probably halfway between hip and waist), so that it won't gape and then play with the number and spacing until it looks balanced.

Button size isn't the only factor -- button shape and color will add or subtract "visual weight" and subtly affect the spacing.

Thanks everyone for your comments! (I'd forgotten I'd posted this, in the frenzy of finishing some items for the Pattern Stash Contest ) I took out a dress with a flared bottom and buttons up the front, and not surprisingly, the buttons were the same size as what I wanted to use. When I measured the buttonholes, they were 3.5'' apart, so I used this measurement. I finished my skirt, reviewed it, and put it in the contest. Thanks everyone for being patient and helpful, and I promise to use my Topic Tracker on the tips as well as the reviews!
