I am a beginner looking to buy a sewing/embroidering machine mainly for putting the cute initials on diaper bags and clothes for my little girl. I have found a Singer Futura CE 250 and 350 on line for under $800. Local dealer in town sells Babylock, but they are just under $2000. Should I bite the bullet and pay the big bucks for a personal (non business machine) or should I buy the inexpensive and hope it doesn't tear up?

I just bought my first machine about 6 weeks ago . . . I was going to buy a Huqsvarna for $1500 and my husband put his foot down. I bought the Brother 900 D for $550 and for a beginner I am very happy with it. I have the same goal with my 2 girls - I want to make them cute stuff. I suggest buying your machine at a dealer that will let you upgrade in the future. Make sure you like to sew/embroider with a reasonably priced machine and then in a year or more you can upgrade and justify the price. Good Luck!

Thanx for the advice. I live in a rural area and the only dealer here carries Babylock. I think Babylock and Brother are actually the same company. I may see if she carries the 900d and try it out in her store. I'm still researching before I buy anything. Does your machine do the cute initials in different sizes?

I have a new electronic machine that , A White D'Lite. It has I believe 60 different stiches w/many embroidery ones. I love it. I have made table mats and napkins using a decoartive border in contrasting colos. I have sewn Imnitial P on my grandbabies hat w/the satin stitch. I love the Egyption( Greek) stitch and I believe I will be able to do smocking down the road after some practice. Be sure to use embroidery thread for top stitching.
