I made the top in a size V and it fits well through the neck and shoulders. I'm a DD and will need to make a FBA. The top has lots of horizontal wrinkles from the waist down so I know I need to add width to the sides.

I laid the pattern on top of a knit top I have that fits me well. Measuring the amount to add plus 1/4 seam allowance has me sewing a size CC (and I wear a size 10 blouse from Talbots - it's my only point of reference cause I hate clothes shopping so I just buy from their catalog.)

Does that seem reasonable? It seems like an awfully big jump!

Or would I be better off doing the FBA and adding width to the sides (and probably to the sleeves too.) I have Real Fit for Real People so I'll start reading it too.

I think using a knit is throwing me off a little too because the fabric is so forgiving. I guess that's another reason why I'm worried about going up to such a bigger size.

Wouldn't it be cool if patterns could be made up at the store in each size so we could just try them all on?

If the top fits at the neck and shoulder it suggests it's the right size. When you do the FBA you will be adding in extra width to the stomach and hip area anyway. That may be all you need, depending on the size your FBA.

If you have the chance to attend a Palmer/Pletsch fitting workshop it will help a lot. I don't know how easy that will be for you - but absolutely worth the time and money involved. If you are going to sew a lot, it will solve many of your fit questions quickly and easily.

I have made the Jalie twist top with a fba to fit a DD....(Sorry I have a hard time doing pattern reviews because I cannot seem to get the camera and computer to cooperate)....Anyway

If the neck/shoulder area fit...do NOT start with a bigger size.
I would do the fba first on the size that fits the neck/shoulder....the fba will give you width in the top and waist/hip......so you may not need to increase the side seams...you can always do that later, but you gotta cover the girls.

I used many ideas from Debbie (the sewing diva) Cook's tutorial for fba on twist top

Debbie's twist top tutorial

The top is not the same, but the idea is similar. If you have made the Jalie top, you know there is a separate area for the bust and underbust material. I did Debbie's fba for the bust area and then adjusted the below bust portion to fit accordingly. HTH, ML
