rayon or cotton batiste lining? (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 10/5/08 10:39 AM ET
I'm making a dress in soft cotton (soft like worn out bedlinen).
My experience is that this kind of cotton tends to hike up and get stuck in my pantyhose. So I will underline the skirt part, but am unsure if I should use rayon or cotton batiste lining. I want cotton, but fear it's not stable or snug free enough.
Any recommendations for lining fabric for soft cotton?

I think the Ambiance lining (rayon) should work fine, and it will keep your skirt from hiking up. I've used it to underline soft, drapey rayons when making a sleeveless 'column' dress, and it then also serves as the lining. No slip needed.

I personally don't like rayon. I use silk habotai lining for all my couture garments no matter what they're made from. It does unravel easily and is a bit slippery to cut out but being silk, it breathes much better than rayon and you won't have the static issue.

Sorry. Just reread your message and got confused with lining and underlining! For soft cotton underlining, I would suggest cotton voile or batiste

Thank you for the replies! I plan to use underlining instead of lining since it will add a bit of body to the soft cotton. Good to hear that cotton voile could work, I am thinking that I should wrap some cotton voile around my legs and walk around to see if it hikes up
