Re: Brother 900D or 1200 sewing/embroidery machine? (posted on 10/8/08 12:06 PM ET)
Hi, I am considering buying either the Brother Innovis 900D or the Brother Innovis 1200 but I am not sure what the real differences are between the two machines except that the 1200 cost about $200 more and has the Nickelodeon embroidery cards and the 900 D has the Disney. Does the 1200 has everything the 900D has plus more except for the Disney stuff? Is it justifiable getting the 1200 instead of the 900D? Thank You for any information you can offer.

It appears the 1200 has a larger (5 x 7) embroidery area. The area on the 900 is 4 x 4.

The 4 x 4 embroidery area will limit the designs you can use.

Using a design that is larger that what the machine is programmed to stitch would require the design to be split into two or more sections. The item being embroidered has to be re-hooped and the design realigned. You would need additional software to do this, or find an embroidery design company that provides this service.

Yes, the 1200 is easily worth the $200 difference. It is a larger machine with larger embroidery field and more stitches, etc but no Disney.

Thank you for the feedback, I very much appreicate it. Does anyone know if there is anything that the Brother 900D has that the 1200 does not (except for the Disney stuff of course) and also can I never ever do a Disney design on the 1200 even if I buy a memory card or download them from the internet.

The taste of Disney card is the only one that will work in a non D machine. You must have the D to be able to stitch out any of the other Disney designs.
If it is only embroidery that you are interested in you might consider a machine that does just that. There are two available through Brother, Disney and non-Disney. They will do the 5x7 stitch out field. Which is as large as the 1200 will do. The 1200 comes with a larger hoop but that allows you to reposition the hoop to add another design but not to stitch out a design larger than 5x7.
I had this machine and enjoyed it, but traded up within a year for a 2500D as I was hooked and wanted more.
They didn't have these machines when I was first looking or would have considered one of them instead. The reason being is that I already had a sewing machine and just wanted to embroider while sewing something.
So if you would consider this, get one of the embroidery only machines, and pick up a used reconditioned from the dealer as well and you could have the best of both worlds for about the same as the 1200.
Checkout the 700II on HSN as well as it has the USB connection and is priced very well but does not do Disney.

You could go to the Brother site and do a comparison there. Here is the link - Brother

Thanks for all the information, it helps to hear what others have to say. I checked the Brother website and did a side by side comparison but the problem is that they neglect to list all of the features for each machine.

For example, the site states that the 900D has the Free Arm feature, side cutter, etc. but does not say if the 1200 has them, however other sites say that the 1200 has these feature so the information on the brother site is not exactly precise and does not disclose as true as it could. I could go to a variety of websites and compile the information for these 2 machines but then I wonder how accurate is the information if they neglect to tell you about all the features that the machines have.

For this reason I was wondering if anyone had the 1200 and possible know about the 900D and so would be able to tell me what the 1200 is missing that the 900D has. I am planning on buying one of these machines this week so any feedback relating to my questions would be greatly appreciated. Also I am trying to buy a new sewing/embroidery machine combo. Thanks again to everyone.

Kirsi--I don't have either machine but as considering the 900D for embroidery before getting my Babylock.

I took a look at the 2 machines at Brother's website--you are right the descriptions do seem a bit vague in places. From what I can tell the 1200 is going to give you a faster sewing speed 850 Spm, bigger stitch area for embroidery 5x7 and kneelift capability. The 900 does have Disney built in patterns and can use Disney designs whereas the 1200 will be limited to just the Taste of Disney card.

Brother's UK site seems to have a bit more info--including a short video and the brochure under the literature tab.
Brother 1200
Maybe that will help?

Kirsi,
Wondering which machine you decided on? I have the 900 D -it is my first machine for sew & embr - I've had it for a few months and already want to upgrade to have the 5 x7 hoop. I'm doing more embr than sewing and am wondering if I should just get an embr machine.
Good luck!
