I am branching out into the world of online purchases. Don't laugh. I still don't have cable, am only on my third cell phone in nearly ten years, and love my Discman.

I set up a PayPal account and now haven't a clue what to do next. I would read the site but I am on information overload and a bit short on sleep (lonnnng...story that has nothing to do with this post). I would appreciate a quick & dirty intro into the world of online shopping and PayPal.

Thanks all.

The PayPal site gives all the info needed. Pay special attention to the issues of security.

To use PP, you need to do business with someone that accepts PP. PP is listed right along with Visa and MasterCard.

You can also transfer money from your bank or credit card account via PP to that of your son who also has a PP account and is in need of a "loan".

I don't expect to see any deposit to my PP account in payment of this "loan" anytime soon.

If buying via Ebay, you will get an auto-generated Pay Now which is clickable & zips you to PayPal.
OR/you can go to the Paypal site to conduct your business.

FIRST: You ALWAYS check to see that the yellow LOCK-Sign is present on your internet page, both Top & Bottom-so that you Know you are sending a Secure Payment, At a Secured Site.
Once positive 100% Secure:
You will be directed to enter your password,
enter the amount,
any discount codes-if you have any,
whether you want insurance,
what shipping type,
then re-total,
Then click Pay,
the payment is sent,
You will imediately recieve a Payment Sent notice in your email box.
I keep an email file of:
Pending/(Unpaid)
Paid/(not-recieved)
Fini(completed)-for reference.
Until you are positive What Is a legitmate Paypal email,
& What Is Not a Paypal generated email-you might want to conduct your Payment Sends from the PayPal website-

Scammers/Phishers have been known to use emails which appear to be from PayPal to trick you into send identifying info.
Paypal & Ebay will NEVER send emails requesting private identifying info/passwords/bank info, etc.
(Ebay/PP want all such scam/spam emails to be sent directly to them so they can attempt to track down the source).
Though I have some issues with the current non-PP related changes at ebay-I have always found PP to be safe & secure. & it is my preferred choice to make secure online payments.

As Chris said, just beware of Phishing. When in doubt, type in the paypal address and access that way.

More and more online vendors are accepting Paypal as a form of payment. I love it because I just use my checking account but you can also change it to use a credit card.

You can send friends or family money, give donations, etc. to anyone who has a Paypal account. All you need is their email address. The "free" version has a $ limit for monthly transactions, not sure what it is now but it used to be $500.
