I'll be in San Francisco briefly for the New Year. 2.5 days to be exact.

I've been a few times before, but wanted to see if there was something I may have missed. I'll be hitting up the bridge, Coit Tower, and Golden Gate Park for sure.

I like sewing, photography (taking/viewing), and odd ball places.

Any random suggestions or local eateries to grab some grub at. Local transport will be the bus.

Much appreciation.

Alcatraz - my number one favorite tourist attraction!

And totally second the idea to see the YSL exhibit at the DeYoung. It's absolutely terrific.

Also the Cliff House - you can eat AND take amazing photos.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. - Steve Jobs

Check out Union Square where all the stores are including Britex Fabrics. I used to live in that neighborhood. I also highly recommend Muir Woods.

I was going to suggest the YSL exhibit, too. I'll be going mid-Jan--can't wait!

Probably on the far, far side of oddball, but the former Alameda Naval Air Base on Alameda Island has some truly random Hollywood connections. And, at last visit (5 years ago) they were all accessible to the public.

The original (and, IMHO, better) "Yours, Mine, and Ours" was filmed partially on the airbase - you'll recognize the watertowers (they are still there, right?), the runway, and it's a fun game to try and find the first house the father and his family "lived" in (note: interior shots don't match the house layout at all). The second Matrix movie's highway scene was shot on one of the runways and the asphalt and divider lines are still there. And Mythbusters does a lot of their tests on that same runway. That same runway also was the staging ground for all the fire trucks in the Oakland hills firestorm.

Plus it's a FANTASTIC place to watch the sun set behind San Francisco. Seriously, it's a million-dollar view for free. So just in case you wanted some of the oddest of the oddball places to visit. :)

ETA- just noticed that you're limited to public transportation which probably crosses this off the list. Oh, well, keeping it here for anyone else who's visiting the area and wants to stray waaaay off the path of standard tourist sites. :)
