is walking foot needed on this machine? (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

I just bought an older model Viking Designer 1 with embroidery arm and wondered if I needed a walking foot when I quilting through all 3 layers? The machine has an Auto Sensor Foot that sets the presser foot down at the correct height for the thick fabric, but the dual feed issue may still require a walking foot. Does anyone have this info? Do I need to buy a walking foot? Many [email protected]

Here is a lengthy, but interesting review where the reviewer states that she noticed no difference in the stitching when using a walking foot, but did not address slippage of fabric layers.

I would get a walking foot.

I have the designer 1 and I think the walking foot really does make a difference. It really helps hold the layers together. I use it when I quilt, when sewing fleece and many other times. If I'm not working on anything that needs a speciality foot I have just been leaving it on the machine. I think it is definitely worth it. You might pick up a used one on ebay.

Adding my recommendation for a walking foot too. The auto-sensor is great but when sewing many layers the walking foot is definitely needed.

A walking foot will give you a nice even feed, so I would invest in one if I were you. The D1 is a nice machine, enjoy it!

I'm not a Viking owner, but a walking foot will be well worth the money you invest when you sew on napped fabrics like courduroy and velvet. I use mine with a lot of woolens and even knits and own one for all three brands of machines I sew on.
