Pardon my ignorance, but do some of these people broadcast music to go with their light displays, or is that just for the video? Man, I sure HOPE it's just for the video.

for the link i gave, i'm pretty sure he has it synced to music that is broadcast on the radio. he's some computer guru guy (i got the link from a high school classmate that works for microsoft, the christmas light guy also works for MS). it's pretty cool, no?

like i said, though, i'm glad i'm not his neighbor. i'm also glad i'm not the one that has to take it down and put it away.

A LOT of these people set up their own little radio station frequency (or whatever/however they do it) and the music will come in on a radio channel in your car when you get near the house. If the house isn't too close to the next door neighbor, you can often hear it in the yard.

We had a local guy who was famous in the area for his home display. He finally had to move it to a commercial setting. I don't know how the neighbors stood it.

Ooohh, just searched, he's got a web site: Planet Christmas

Wow, I too am very glad I'm not the neighbor of one of these people.

I thought the lights and technology were stunning and Amazing Grace is one of my favorite hymns, just wanted to spread some cheer.

Wow, the people who put these displays together have more patience than I ever will! I keep envisioning Russ from "Christmas Vacation" being told to untangle that ball of lights that Clark gives him.

In Richmond, VA, the tradition is what we call "Tacky Lights." The goal, believe it or not, is to see who can do the tackiest lights every year. People go all out, and a lot of them will let you get out of your car and walk through their displays. They play music, but they don't usually sync the music and lights like the people on the other links do. The paper publishes the list every year, and people go on tours. You can either drive yourself, or the local limo and bus companies sell tour packages -- they usually include some food and hot chocolate and stuff like that.

I think I could stand to live next door to someone like that as long as the lights were turned off at a reasonable hour. And with energy prices being what they are, who can afford to run a display like that all night long?

Tishie,
Thankyou for sending that link. My DS was sent the link in an email and was telling us about the house, but had already deleted.
I loved the display. Here. most people that do the light displays do use timers, and the displays always have huge numbers driving past and admiring.
