I remember reading a thread about it on here a few years ago, but I can not remember what is was now. What options do I have to test out patterns, etc. before the final cutting of fabrics? I know that there is muslin, but I remember some people raving over some alternative stuff that they were ordering from a website.

The alternative stuff was probably soil separator paper. Here's the thread. Click here.
You can also use sew-in non woven interfacing and swedish tracing paper.

I have used Swedish Tarcing paper quite a bit and love it. I hate tissue patterns . This fabric likem paper can be sewn on and I expect to try it as a primer for a stretch knit dress to get that snug look.
