A local lady is selling a Pfaff serger for $85. It's a Hobbylock 788 serger. she says it has differential feed, 4 spool, and has new blades. She has the owners manual and says that is sews great. I have never owned a serger, nor used one.

Is this a good deal? Should I get it? She did say the last time she had is serviced was a couple of years ago, so I am expecting that expense (I service my sewing maching yearly and I don't sew heavily...any more. I used to and serviced it every 3-6 mo.)

What do y'all think?

I had one a few years ago and paid $150 for it used so $85 seems like a great price if all is working well. The 788 is a really nice serger, though parts may be hard to find for it. It's still a bargain if you get a few years use out of it.

I just checked ebay they have two. one is selling for 175.00 plus 32.00 shipping and handling. the other is prices at 50.00 plus 25.00 s&h. at 85.00 it is a good price. Go look at it. take it for a serger drive see how it feels and if it sounds solid. If it is all of those BUY it.

I have a different Phaff Hobbylock. It is being serviced and I cannot remember the number 784 I think. I have had it for 11 years and it was bought used for me. I love it.

Mine is a 3/4 thread without differential. I use it a lot.

I had a 788 for about 7 years and it was a nice serger in that the stitching was great once I got the tensions set exactly so, which could take some time to accomplish. I found it difficult to thread and often spent more time getting that done than the actual stitching with it. I traded it in for the Babylock Imagine, which I am quite happy with. The dealer gave me $200 for the 788. He did sell it to someone but I have no idea how much he got for it. The serger is very solid and well built just not as trouble-free as I wanted. But, for $85, if it is in good condition then spend the extra $50-$100 to get it serviced and it's still a good deal.

Does anyone know what type of additional foot attachments the Hobbylock 788 uses? I can't find anything with the #s provided on the manual. I see several parts offered on line but I'm not sure they work. Any ideas?
