I struggled with this decision, whether to trade the floor model MC6600P I picked up last week for a NIB. I had the extra cash so I decided to go ahead and trade. Granted, I had to fork out another $235.00 for the new one, but I feel really good about it. New vs. used, new vs. used.

I actually think the dealer gave me a foot control from a different machine because the new one looks entirely different. And the extension table is bright and shiny new instead of beat up looking. The needle threader on it works a little differently too. So, I'm left wondering exactly how long that floor model had been on the floor. I also wondered if it was maintained on the floor the same way I would maintain my own machines and how much use it got on the floor. Had the wick been oiled at all?

When I called to inquire about trading the dealer seemed hesitant, even though they are great folks. He asked me why I wanted to do that and did I realize how much $$$ I had saved by getting the floor model. He also asked me if there was anything wrong with the machine, which I told him no, I just wanted a NIB. So I put her away until my new machine came in. Boy, did I want to pull her out and sew on her, but I figured I'd play it safe and keep her put away. It was only for a few days. It came in late yesterday but I was able to get over there and bring her home.

She literally purrs so I know I made the right decision. More so than the floor model IMO. $235 extra out of pocket seems like a small price to pay for peace of mind.

I think you made the right decsion. You don't know the history of the used model. How heavily it was used etc. These machines last a long time and are worth buying new.

That's what I thought. Not knowing the history of how it was maintained was what bugged me the most. At least now I know I will be the one responsible for keeping it in pristine condition. She sure is pretty

I know this machine and agree you made the right choice..I once had an associate at the lumberyard explain to me why you should not buy a demo..it really stuck with me..so I would have to have at least 50% off before I would buy a floor model which is essentially a used machine..If the machine has been ther a few years then think of how much use the computer brain has already had.. There is no price to be put on peace of mind..I generally have noticed you have a real head on your shoulders about things so if your gut telling to go new then I knwo you made the right decision..The 235. may have been a good discount from the dealers point of view but I think you realize that was not enough discount and he may not even get what you paid for it from another customer since now these machines are starting to show up NIB and pretty new on the net sites.. I buy a lot of machines and everything I have learned and everything in my gut says you definitely made the right decision here..

Wow! Good for you. Isn't it awesome when you follow your heart. There is such a peace and calm in that type of purchase.

Not to change the topic but I like your thought process about buying a demo at least 50% off. I was having buyer's remorse for getting the floor model Kenmore 19606 for $158 since I already had the NIB 19606.

Considering how much less the floor model was from the original price, I thought I would get it for the boys.

But you bring up a good point about the computer brain. I'm sure my floor model is "original floor model" when the model first came out. So, I now wonder how much use it has had.

Sometimes a demo is a great choice. Not only price-wise, but they have had to keep it running well! I am referring to a sewing machine dealer here, not Sears. I bought my Platinum off the floor and it is great. And I saved. I onoly buy machines with a three digit dollar price. Not four. ;)

Wow, I didn't even think that the floor model might be the 'original'. Just think of how many demos it may have been through if it was. I demoed it at least twice before I purchased it.

I'm sure they've sold a lot of these machines, so I'm sure its been sewn on a lot. In fact, when I went in yesterday to return it, they had another floor model on display and one of the gals that works there was using it for something for herself. She told me she didn't blame me for exchanging it. She has her eye on one for herself and asked her DH to get one for her as a birthday present.

Yes, I know now that I made a wise decision. I have projects lined up waiting to be put together. Between my new Viking Mega Quilter and now this machine, I'm in sm heaven.

Muffet, I agree with you that a dealer should have the machine in good working order. But, it makes one wonder just in case. For example, before I bought a Viking Emerald 118 I inquired about a White machine. The gal at JoAnn's couldn't even get the floor model to sew a stitch. Although, I would never compare a true sm dealer with the staff at JoAnn's. Heck, a large percentage of the staff at JoAnn's Viking stores knows very little about the machines they carry. Frustrating. It seems they are all into their TOL machines but not so much so in their lower end to mid-range models.

In your case I might change my mind for the following reasons..I just have never seen that many people putting a sewing machine through its paces at Sears..also you notice that they do really discount their floor models.. Perhaps there are others who shop Sears more often than I and know different ..however remember what the original price was on this machine..You are getting more than half off I believe..and of course with a Sears purchase you may return the machine if you find it has problems when you have put it through a few days use..so be sure to check it out as well as the one you purchased NIB..
