what are my options? (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

Well, I've been reading patternreview for over a year now, what a wealth of information, and now I finally have a question! I just bought a well-kept 301A black and gold Singer, but it came without a pedal. I've been trying to research which pedal to buy, and some sources seem to say I need an original bakelite pedal with the switches, while others seem to think I could use a featherweight.
Here's a link to the back of my new machine.
So, do I need to buy an original? Does anyone have an appropriate model number, or source for purchasing 301 parts? Should I wait around for another craigslist posting of one???? I'm trying to not spend more on the pedal than I did on the machine, but it's seeming unavoidable at this point!

there is one on ebay for about 28.00 including shipping and handling.
You can check your sewing centers maybe a mom and pop one that just fixes sewing machines. Good luck

No, you don't need a bakelite original, although one may add a bit more collectability value to your machine. A cord set from a black or tan featherweight, or any other Singer model from the same era should work. Any machine fitted with an external belt-driven Singer motor will use the same cords, although other brands may not.
I'm pretty sure you can get a new cord set and controller from Cindy Peters ( ). I wired in a cheap new electronic controller on my fav 301 for FM quilting, because these don't get as hot as the simper resistor types. Cords and controller are definitely worth buying for this machine, regardless of how much you paid for it.

There are two different wiring arrangements on 301s. Yours is the early style. On these, they were wired just as a 221, and the controller on the double lead cord will work just fine. On many later ones, they had a separate 2 prong plug for the controller, just like the 401. There were a few in the middle that were wired so that you could use either controller setup, so actually, they were wired three different ways.

Excellent, thanks for all the information and clarifying the differences. I think I may buy a new pedal for the reasons you gave, Jennifer, and I'll check my local stores first.

Not all new pedals are electronic. Many are carbon pile type controllers, and will also get wram with extended slow spped sewing just like the vintage Singer "button" controllers.
