If any of you have been following the dedicated sewing space thread you may have read a few months back that I was moving therefore losing my two sewing places. Anyway, how long should/would you keep the box your machine came in. I still have the boxes for all of my machines. My youngest machine is close to two now. I have no intention of selling them, but I'm filled with the "what-ifs" ,(what if I have to send it back to the manufacturer, what if we move across the country next time . . . blah, blah, blah). Should I just discard the boxes so I can utilize the needed space. I'm not too keen on using the boxes to store other items in for the time being It's unbelievable how the simplest of decisions keep me awake at night .....sheesh!

I only kept my sewing machine boxes as a place to store things. When that was no longer needed, I tossed them. Should I need to ship the boxes to manufacturer, I'd taking them to a packing store and have them pack it. Yeah, I'd have to pay for it, but won't have the aggravation of excess boxes around. Those things are big and bulky!

Maybe I'm one of those neurotic box-keepers. I kept the box for my Pfaff 7570 that I bought 13 years ago and thought I would never sell. Well, I sold it last month and that box sure came in handy. Same with a serger I sold and was lucky enough to buy used in it's original box. I'm going to keep the boxes for all the new stuff I just bought. If you've got the space to store it, then do it! All those "what-ifs" will be answered. I just need to clean out our small attic space to make room for them now...the box for my Brother QC 1000 is huge!

Hi Miss Tara! I have to laugh at that one because I am in the same boat but only I don't lay awake at night thinking about it
We have been in our house for 13 years and are now making a huge move south.... out of the winters! and....I am so glad for the boxes I've kept. We will be using a moving company and I just cringe thinking of moving all my babies! About half of the machine's I have boxes and styrofoam for, sold a lot of my collection, and just won't have the room anymore.
I would think a good rule of thumb is to keep them if you need to send the machine out for warrantee. If a local dealer sends them out they should have boxes. A long distance move is the exception! Now.... I wish I had all my boxes but they are a pain to keep, especially when you need to down size. I am still going to try to keep my boxes even after we move….. not sure if I will love or hate the desert!

I would keep them but break them down so they take up less room. You can then store them flat or stand up against a wall. Problem solved!

Edited here: OK, OK, so I forgot about the foam. In that case, you could set up only 1 large box to house the foam from all your machines............................couldn't you?

If you don't have the room, throw out the boxes.

Boxes are not rare and shipping stores can box and pad the machines for you if you every need to.

If you move or have to ship your machine ever, you really are best off with the original packaging. I saved my Pfaff packaging from the time it came in 1977 until I finally felt I should unload it after three moves and we finally seem to be really settled after 30 years here (!). So about two years ago I got rid of the box. Some days I am not happy I did. If I do ever ship it I will miss that box. I have all the boxes from my machine that had boxes. Two of my machines had no boxes as the dealer said "they didn't have them any more." HA. I think they do that so you won't buy a demo and resell it as easily. When I think of all the "stuff" we have around here that would be higher on the list to toss, I figure I can keep my sewing machine boxes.

Hi Mufffet,
We bought a house in Henderson NV and am from MN so HUGE difference! I've lived all my life here but husband hates the snow......
We have friends there so that will help, grandkids here but hopefully cheap flights to come and visit.
Sewing room is way smaller and I have a wonderful set up now. I was HUGE into collecting vintage machines and most of them are gone now other than a couple treadles, my FW and a 15 series Singer. What is crazy I had machines at the cabin in WI and here in MN so once moved I will still need to unload; it is a tough thing to do. I love them all but need to get back to reality!! I have one 1530 I've been trying to sell and haven't because I don't want to ship....back to the box thing.....
I'm hoping to rejoin ASG once moved so I can start networking. Radar

That's definitely desert! Went through there on my way out here. But you'll enjoy the sunsets; they are spectacular.
