Deep breath...as I take a break from this serger (1997 Singer Ultralock). This was serger my late aunt gave to me about four years ago before her passing. She never used it and I have only used it once prior to now.
I have it threaded correctly thru the tension disks and color coded area. My problem is the thread that sits on top of the raw edge...is that the upper looper thread?
Based on what I can tell, the thread is not tight enough. I can actually move the thread on the fabric (medium weight satin) after a stitch out.l
Or, is it the machine? I just found another woman (different forum) say her Singer Ultralock has loose stitches.

I suggest to make sure that your thread antenna is all the way up as high as it will go, that your thread is seated well in the tensions and also double check that you have not missed any of the thread guides.
Widen your stitch width..if you still have loose stitches. By using a wider width it sometimes tightens the looper tensions. If still a problem you can also lengthen your stitch and tighten your upper looper.
Thick fabric needs looser looper tensions while thin fabric needs tighter looper tension.

I went back and checked so far:
1. Antenna all the way up
2. Thread in tension disks
3. Changed the length and looper tensions (was worse)
I don't know how or where to change the width. I don't see any instructions in the manual about adjusting the width.
I'm ready to throw this thing away and get the Brother Lock at sears.com. I so believe it is the machine...just crappy. It should not be THIS difficult to find the right tension setting.

I wish I knew your model. Does your serger take a plate change for the rolled hem? Could you have the plate on that has the small stitch finger when you need the plate with the larger stitch finger?
Is there a knob on the inside left of the serger that you can push to change the width? Sorry, wish I could help more. Since you already checked the other things I would think just adjusting the width or using wider bite of the knife would help. Have you tried just cutting off a bit more of the edge of the fabric to see if that helps?
Maybe somebody with an Ultralock will post to help. I wish you the best.

My model is a Singer Ultra4D w/Differential Feed. Or do you need numbers for the model number?
I don't know about the stitch plate.. I'll go check and see.

do you have the book? It should show you how to thread it.
Some serger need a little loop around the top to give it some drag. I know my coverhem need that little loop.
i really can't quit explane it to you. on the top you have a lay in type tenion with adjusters. when you start threading your thread there on the top.there is a bar where the thread goes threw before the tension adjusters you sometimes have to go through the hole go around the back and lay the thread in the tenion adjusters this could make thread stitch more even.
