An idea from RTW (Moderated by Deepika)

I'm not sure if this is old news or what... but yesterday I was shopping for capris at Marshall's and found a really cute pair of red ones that I love (under $15). They look great, in part due to the fact that they have this tummy slimming feature in them, which I've never seen before in pants. I saw one other pair from a different brand that also had it, but I didn't try them on. While trying my red ones on I really was impressed that they helped to control the bulge I get below the waistband but above my panties. (That area is what motivates me to lose weight. Boy do I hate that bulge.) When I was taking them off in the dressing room, I noticed that they have some kind of power mesh or something sewn into the waistband from the side seams to the zipper in the front. You don't feel like you're being sucked in, either. The look is subtle but very effective!
Anyways, the reason why I posted this fact in this thread is I though it might be interesting to try that on a pair of pants that I sew myself. I actually have not yet made a pair of pants, but it's in my future. Has anyone heard of this technique before? Tried it? It seems so simple to do. Maybe I'll take a pic of my new pants at home and post it. I'd love to try it when I make my own.

That would be a tummy "stay". Since I am at work, I can't check, but either Sandra Betzina in Power Sewing or FFRP shows you how to add this feature to pants.
I have a couple pair of twill pants from Coldwater Creek from several years ago and the cotton for the pocket is extended to the fly forming a stay. Yes, it does have a nice slightly slimming effect. And, yes, me too, if I ever get a pants pattern perfected, that is one thing for sure that my pants will include.

In one of her videos or books, Sandra Betzina actually says you can substitute power mesh for the invisible part of the pocket stay that goes over the tummy. You just want to be sure it's not so snug that it distorts the top layer of the pants.

Okay, that makes sense! I couldn't imagine that this was so radically new. Of course it's new to me, and I love the concept. Tummy slimming underwear doesn't really work for me because the waist is always too tight and gives me muffin top. When I get around to making some pants I'll check out Sandra Betzina's book and do it.
