Ankle-length skirt, knee-length lining? (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

A friend wants me to sew two 8 gored, a-lined ankle-length skirts out of linen or something very breathable. She wants them to be lined only to the knees, as she'll be wearing them in the heat. My instincts tell me not to sew a half-lining - I've never heard of such a thing.
I could sew it with the full lining and she could do whatever she pleased (hack it off and cut it).
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Why not make it the way she wants? Lining doesn't serve much purpose below the knees of a skirt, unless the outer fabric is scratchy. That wouldn't be the case with a light linen.

Yes, you can make her a half lining...just like someone can wear a half slip with a long skirt. It will keep the skirt smooth and prevent see through if it is a lightweight fabric. As a matter of fact, you can do the same thing with pants, something that I learned from Sandra Betzina. A half lining in pants keeps the knees and rest of the upper portion from bagging out during the day's wearing.

Thank you for the advice. The example garment she gave me is fully lined so I thought I'd just do that. The FF she liked was relatively light so I thought a full lining would look better too. Thank you for setting me straight!
