Well I have finished my Jalie jeans and am pretty pleased with them.....except the waistband. It is cut on the bias and I thought this would make it hug the body but it does the opposite. It stands away from the body.maybe I sewed it on the wrong way but Ive been looking at all RTW jeans I can and all their waistbands are 1 piece and in the back are cut on the straight grain and in the front the grain is slightly on the bias.this leads me to think they must be slightly contoured(is that the right word).Im wondering how would i go about making a contoured waistband for my jeans or can I use any patterns contoured waistband?I surely will appreciate any ideas on this.

If you cut on the bias, it will stretch. Did you interface it?

I always need a contoured waistband, too, and will just draft it using whatever one I like the fit of at the time.

Make sure you don't need to take in a bit from the top of the pants, as well...you don't want any gathers as you attach the waistband. I always have to angle the back seam as well as the waistband.

Odd, I didn't have that problem at all. I did put my waistband on differently than the directions suggested.

This is a quote from my review:
"3. I changed how I put on the waistband by accident. They have you attach the inside of the band, fold in half, fold in SA, and topstitch the outside of the band. Instead, I did it like I do trousers which is to attach the outside of the band, fold it to the inside, and topstitch the outside which catches the inside of the band."

I didn't interface it because the jeans are snug enough that I need that little bit of stretch in the waistband for them to be comfortable.

I used rocketboys method for attaching the waistband.I did interface but ripped it all out after i washed them. maybe if i wash them again it will be better.Cabinbaby, was it not you who started the jeans sew a long? Its because of that ,that I dared venture into jeans sewing. Now i would just like to know how to make a contoured waistband. Are there any easy instructions for this?

I was surprised when I saw that the pattern had the waistband on the bias. For starters the pattern is for stretch fabrics, why put a stretch fabric on the bias? Obviously Cabinbaby made it work for her jeans but it isn't something I would use. RTW uses the contoured waistband a lot and you can add your own to these jeans. You can "borrow" one from a pattern in your stash as long as the pattern shape fits your contours. The resulting full waistband can look pretty rounded so don't be shocked. The band I use looks like this.

When I made mine I cut the waistband on the bias, no interfacing, and used Rocketboy's lining not cut on the bias. I also angled my center back seam as shown on the Jalie website.

Is your waistband standing away from the body all the way around or just in the center back? If it's the center back, I think just angling the CB seam would be your answer, but if it's all the way around the body, I would definitely switch to a contoured waistband. You can trace one of a favorite RTW pair of shorts, pants, or jeans. Just remember to add seam allowances to it.

On all my RTW jeans, the back of the waistband stands away from my body (something I had never really noticed until I made my own). Seriously, I can stick my hand in the back of my pants, no problem. I don't have that with my Jalie jeans.

HTH!

Wow that is a pretty curved waistband!I will definitly give it a go.my waistband stands away from my body in back from side seam to side seam.I did a swayback adjustment for the back yoke like Id read some others were doing by folding out darts in the yoke and I was surprised how curved that ended up but the result is it doesnt gap there,so I am thrilled with that. Now i just need to figure out which curved waistband will fit since I'm not too keen at drafting my own stuff.thank you ya'll!

That perplexd me as well. I made my waistband as directed, but now wish I had cut it on the straight grain. It's too stretchy and gets looser and looser with wear.
