I'm planning on making Neue Mode 23412 (I can't find an easy link to connect to a picture), but the top part of the dress is gathered. I'd ultimately like to do a smooth satin layer with a gathered chiffon overlayer and am hoping to add beads and rhinestone to the chiffon (think elegant but slightly glitzy cocktail dress). My question is...should I add the beading and rhinestone to the chiffon before gathering the chiffon, or after??? I'd hate to end up with lumpy chiffon, but I don't know if I'll have enough beading/rhinestone coverage if I bead after gathering.

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

meg - I found the dress - very snazzy!

The main thing to know is that if you are gluing on the stones, you need to have backing on the chiffon. So you need to be able to slip a sheet of plastic or cardboard with foil or plastic wrap on it behind the chiffon to stop it from sticking to the other fabric.

I don't know the order of how you are constructing, but if you could attach the chiffon to the neckline and leave the waist seam open, you could do it then. You could baste in the gathering so you have an idea of where the stones will be placed in the final product. Nothing like a great big rhinestone on the bust point to make a great gown - well...not so great!

I'd love to see the finished dress. It has possibilities for conversion to a ballroom gown.

Hi Meg, just in case you are planning to use glue backed rhinestones and beads I thought I would pitch in and say, I've been glueing rhinestones to my DIL veil and ring cushion ect. It's so easy and quick and all I do for position is very lightly dot where I want to put the glue ons with an air erasable marker. The rhinestone covers it anyway so no problem there! Have fun! Sue

Here's a link to a black and white drawing: NM 23412. The other possible link I found was to a downloadable pattern and the link was to the shopping cart so I didn't want to do that.

Definitely add the stones before you gather the fabric. Be sure to leave 1/2" space for the presser foot beyond the seam lines, for easier sewing; you can add those stones later if you think you need to.

rag doll - great idea to use the marker! On my ballroom gown (in my profile photo) I used the appliques as a guide and just kind of added to them. I was wondering how to do it if I didn't have them there. Don't know why I didn't think of it, but that's why we have PR!

Meg
Do you want to have the veil cleaned after the wedding? I work for a dry cleaner and we sometimes end up with a pile of beads in the trap after cleaning a garment with deco that has been glued. If you have time, maybe take a sample piece into your cleaner and see how they come out. Maybe try different adhesives. Good luck.
