I've searched the board, but with a 5 week old, I can't look too intensivly, so please forgive me if this has been asked.

How would I go about redrafting a two peice raglan sleeve on a knit garment into a one peice?

The new fall patterns have a great collection of raglan sleeve patterns, but they mostly seem to be two peice sleeves and I HATE the seam down the arm.

Looking at the 2 piece sleeve on my table at the moment, could you not lay the pieces flat so that the seamline is aligned and then where the pieces separate, add a dart?  I think that the seam is to allow shoulder shaping, so the dart would be the same wouldn't it?

Like Miss Frizzle says "Take chances, make mistakes ..." isn't that what fitting is all about? I am happily taking chances and making mistakes as I fit muslin after muslin ...

I've actually done it that way, and it worked really well.   If there's no shaping at the shoulder, and the seam is just decorative, just align the stitching lines and treat it as one piece.  Generally, if you can't think of any good reason why you can't do something, there isn't one.

I agree with this method. I've only "sort of" done it. I made a pattern with this and other alterations out of pattern cloth, but never got around to the actual garment. The sleeve did fit well using the joined seam lines with a dart on top. The trick is to get a really, really smooth dart with the exact curve you need to fit your shoulder.

Hi!  We got our new computer so I can stop in more often ;)  I'm so happy!

Gina, Yes you can turn it into a one piece sleeve w/dart, and I agree it looks better.  The seam can be taped together from the hem up and the top opening part becomes the dart.  You might have to make minor adjustments as you fit the sleeve, but it should look fine.  Good luck!  Felix is such a cutie!

Dale
