I seem to be missing (heaven knows what happened)
a very vital part of the lower looper - indeed the looper itself seems to have sheered off - it's just not there! How can this be? What have I done? Can it be repaired? Will I have to mortgage our house and sell our first born child? Or do I just put the whole overlocker/serger out for the rubbish collection tonight?
I hope you can help me.

take it to a tech for a quote only(mine does free quotes) then you will be able to make an informed decision

Yeh thanks, I will today if I get time. It may even be still under warranty (fingers crossed). But how would this have happened? Was it because of something I did (mostly unlikely though of course!)?

Somethimes the wrong type of needle for the serger can cause problems or even a correct needle not up into the needle bar all the way..or a needle that slips can cause breakage hitting the looper.
Pulling the fabric along and not letting the serger do all the work can cause problems too or wrong threading with the threads tangled. Possible something was not screwed down tight. I would say there could be several reasons that your looper broke but I wouldn't blame yourself.
Did you check well inside the serger to see that it just did not fall off? If it broke off I would think you would have heard it while using it. Such a mystery to just have it go missing. Maybe just ask your tech what he thinks caused the problem and what could prevent this from happening again.
Best of luck to you. I hope the fix will not be too expensive.
