For some pants patterns they have you stretch out the inner back leg before you sew. The edge of the pattern piece is actually shorter than the front piece and you stretch it from the crotch to the knee so they match. I've done this a few times and it works out fine, but I don't understand the reason for it. I'm hoping someone can explain it.

The back inseam is on the bias and this will stretch and give you a baggy seat. The theory goes that if you stretch it ahead of time it will keep you from getting that baggy seat. It works better in some fabrics than others.
