I am a designer and will be making all kinds of garments and alterations with this new sewing machine. I have been using my great grandmothers old old Singer, but I am way past due for an upgrade. I am looking to spend under 1,000 dollars (can i get a great machine for this budget?), but I am open to suggestions over my budget. I obviously need a machine that will do many different stitches, buttonholes, and possible handle some thicker fabrics, etc. I would also love recommendations for a serger and a coverstich machine.
any help is greatly appreciated! thanks!

The Viking Platinum 770 and 775 that have been discontinued are great computerized machines. They originally sold for over $2,000, but you may be able to find one for between $700 and $1,000. I bought a 770 two years ago, and I highly recommend it. I also bought a used Babylock Imagine Wave and a Janome Coverpro 900.
