This morning much to my delight I got an email from an iPhone developer named Mark Guleno who has written a yardage calculator app! There was a recent PR thread about iPhone apps and Mark's wife saw it and mentioned it to him.

Basically you select from common pattern yardages and then select a new fabric width and it tells you the new yardage required. You can go up or down from 32 inch wide fabric to 66 inch wide fabric. There is also a metric conversion function.

It works great and here is the link to the iTues App store:

NAYY - I bought my copy of the app

P.S. had to fix the link!

Oh, thanks, Phyllis -- one more reason to have an iPhone! My DD has been working on me to switch to one and they are definitely alluring.

A thousand blessings on your house for mentioning this! This is going to be extremely popular for garment industry people who need to calculate varying widths for allocation. I can do it in my CAD program but that's only if the pattern has been digitized. We can use this at fabric shows on the fly to figure out the best buy!

I'm going to submit a suggestion to the developer that he also add a cost calculator with it for maybe another price.

Argh, this is awesome and makes me want an iPhone even more! I'm really hoping they'll give up their exclusivity agreement with AT&T... because the service is terrible in my area. Well, for all of you who do have iPhones, ENJOY!

If you can live with the phone you have, you could get an iPod Touch, which works for me (I always end up the month with hundreds of minutes left!).

As of Wednesday, the price of the iPod Touch dropped $50. You could also buy a refurb, which is an iPod that was sold, but was never used (like, say, for a company promotional or something). They're shipped back to the factory, inspected, and then sold at a discounted price with the same warranty as new. It's how I bought mine. Apple Store Refurb iPods

Kathleen as a professional you should definitely give Mark suggestions and feedback. He based v.1.0 on the simple yardge tables used in home sewing and of course a pro would need more calibration up and down in terms of yardage and fabric widths.

Also - I have an iTouch myself and love it!

My 3G nano is holding up well but if I upgrade it would probably be to the Touch. I read about the price drop; I also read that they're adding an FM radio to the new nano. I have to use a radio remote for mine now (I'm addicted to NPR). If the Touch gets FM radio I'm sold! I got a refurbished regular iPod for my brother, although his crashed and then the replacement crashed, too. I know most of the refurbs are no problem but he kept getting lemons.

I also get a small discount through my work - like 6 or 8%. It saves me the tax, which is better than nothing (especially when I got my Macbook).

This new app is just another reason to consider the Touch!

Phyllis - thanks for the link!

Debbie - I'm like you. Not much of a phone talker and always have lots of minutes left. I've been waiting to see if the new iTouch models had cameras. Nope - but not a deal breaker. I am ordering mine TODAY!!!!

Yes, Peggy, I am so tempted to order a 16GB refurb for my DH. He has a Palm right now, but he'd love to have a touch. $199 for the refurb!! I paid, um, $249 for my refurb 16GB a couple of months ago.

I won an I-touch about a month ago from work. I do believe this will be my first app purchase! Thanks for the heads up.
