I am making a full gathered skirt with pretty sheer fabric and I need to line it. I have never lined a skirt before so I have NO idea what I'm doing. What would be the best way to about it? Should I cut a piece of lining in the same width as the fashion fabric and gather it as one (fabric and lining together), gather the lining separately OR should I cut the lining with just enough ease to be comfortable and then attach it to the skirt? Does that even make sense?

I would cut the lining out using the skirt pattern. Then sew up the sides of the skirt and lining seperately. Next put the skirt over the lining with wrong sides together and baste them together at the waist. Then finish your waistline however it gets finished, whether its turned down or a band is put on it. The hems would be done seperately.

Thanks. The skirt is gathered, I am using roughly a 1:2 ratio and I am using my ruffling foot to gather it. I will then add a thin waistband.

That would be the easiest, if that is the look you want - full lining identical to outer fabric.

Yes, it makes sense if you want a straight skirt look under the gathered sheer. This is a personal preference about which look you prefer. Depending on how sheer the fabric is, your lining may be highly visible and the design choice is yours.
