Chipped Porcelain Flatbed (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 10/13/09 4:27 PM ET
Here's the story. My MIL gave me a Kenmore 158 Series Machine from the mid 70's in a lovely cabinet. I took the machine in for a tuneup, followed by a phone call from the tech that one of the metal gears was shot. He could fix the machine but it would never do a zigzag--only a straight stitch. I said forget it, but I'll keep the cabinet.
Then he said every one or two months a Kenmore will come into the shop that would fit the cabinet. So one came in, another Kenmore 158 series machine, today! He gave me the low-down on it, nothing wrong and he can do a tuneup, but the porcelain bed has a couple deep chips in it.
Does anyone know what I could use to fill in the dings on the flatbed and smooth it out?

If the chips really bother you, perhaps pass on this offer?
Besides, he did say that every one or two months, a Kenmore comes along...

Poplin,
The chips don't really bother me. I was just thinking if I could fill them in with something, then I would do that.

You can get porcelain touch up paint at a plumbing supply place or an appliance store that still does repairs (do they exist?). Don't know about matching the colours, though. Another place to try would be an auto body shop. Somewhere in the sands of time I recall something about the car guys being able to match paint and even do things like change the colour of appliances for fairly cheap.

Here's a product you can check. It's called Bondo, comes in a green and white tube and is used for professional glazing and spot putty. Here's what it says: Quickly repairs stone chips, paint scratches and minor dents. Bonds to primer, metal, fiberglass and aluminum. Ready to sand in 20 minutes. Professional looking results. It's availble in auto parts stores..............maybe even hardware stores. Good luck. Congrats, too.

Thanks! We have a slew of auto parts stores in our town so that should be an easy product to look for today. And we have a lot of hardware stores and two plumbing supply places, too, as tourist mentioned in her post. Besides grocery stores and fast food chains, there's nothing else LOL.

my dearly loved 158 has many many chips and it still works like a horse. The dual belt system can't be beat! The chips I have are from my clumsiness -- dropping items that don't bounce.

I just read this suggestion from the vintagesingers yahoo group about touch up paint.
The member bought the brand Dupli-Color from an auto paint store. It's a "roller ball pen" that has a small brush tip. I'm not sure if you can get this in any color you want. The member is replying to a thread on touching up black paint.
If this works out for you, let me know. I don't know when I can drop by an auto paint store, but I'm getting highly interested now, especially if it seems that easy.
