I dropped off two 3-yard cuts of wool at the dry cleaners the other day. I didn't even ask how much it would be, since I don't remember it being that exorbitant last time. I picked them up today--$50!!!! OMG! That's almost as much as I spent on the fabric!

DID I GET TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS???
sorry I had to say that

But really, is that a normal price for cleaning that much fabric?

Wow, that seems extremely high, especially since they can just toss it in and do a "press only" at the end. Should not be more than a suit to clean, IMO.

That is much more than what I pay. I pay about the same as I would for a coat to have lengths of fabric cleaned. However, my dry cleaner is an independent, and his wife also sews so he knows what I am "up to." He will also block seams for me on half-finished garments for just a couple of dollars. He will also just steam for me for wool if that is what I want.

Well I will try another place next time. The trouble is that many times there is a bit of a communication problem, you know?

The tag said "blanket" when I got them back so maybe that is part of the reason. I've never taken bedding in, so I don't know if it usually costs that much either.

I've never taken in a blanket, so I have no idea if that's reasonable or not. However, I had my down comforter cleaned last year and it was around $50.

Is there a bulk dry cleaner in your area? There were some here that charged for the cleaning by weight, not by item. I never tried them but it's an idea.

I have no idea, but I might call around next time. I don't know when next time is but I wanted a camel color coat, too, and maybe a plaid coat. I love coats!

I'd go back to the dry cleaner and question the price you were charged. Or at least complain and say that you feel like you were ripped off. This is just yardage after all! It sounds to me like they made a mistake.

It sounds like they might have cleaned it. Did you ask them just to press it? That might be part of the price difference, although that still seems high.

I did ask them to clean it, as I've read a few different places including PR that you should pretreat the fabric as you will be washing it after it's completed.

I have always found it challenging to have fabric yardage cleaned for the same reason. It can be really pricey, especially for larger pieces which the place insists must be coded as a blanket (expensive) or a tablecloth (even more expensive), even though I keep saying that it doesn't need to be pressed into a neat rectangle. Most recently I took a shorter peice (2 yards of 60" wool) and the counter clerk put it in as a "scarf", much cheaper. Hmmm, maybe I'll just wear really big scarves . . .
