Project Runway hates them (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 10/25/09 2:02 PM ET
In Canada we get Project Runway a few weeks later than you do in the U.S., so I just saw the episode where someone was kicked off for designing a dress with ruffles. (What do I know -- it was virtually the only outfit I liked...) These particular ruffles were, I'll agree, too OTT for day wear, which is what she was aiming for. However, I was really confused by the panel's apparent total hatred of any ruffles. Burda still regularly designs items with ruffles, and I understand that Burda is a few years ahead of North America. I admit that the ruffles I've seen recently are mostly a bit more subdued than some a year or two ago, but I just don't get the "no modern woman would wear ruffles" position of the Project Runway panel.
I'm not asking, "Do you hate or love ruffles?" I know there are strong opinions out there about this. But I am really trying to figure out how Project Runway's judges could be so far off what we often see in pattern designs from BWOF and so on.

Maybe they are sort of on the way out, but I'm still seeing a lot of ruffles in stores. I think what the judges were saying was "no modern woman would want to wear THOSE ruffles."
I sort of liked the navy dress, although I don't think it was striking enough for a runway design. I think the light blue dress with the "shower loofah ruffles" one is what I think got her the axe. I think placement and proportion is important, and that's probably what the judges were trying to criticize. There are so many variations on ruffles and flounces, I think you'd be hard pressed to say ruffles are "out" across the board.

I don't think patterns are designed to be completely 100% on fashion. IMHO they design patterns to be close but just not "right" because they can't put out RTW designs, just interpretations of trends and silhouettes. They are a good starting place.
That said, a quick look on Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom shows ruffles here and there, blouses and dresses, chiffon and organza but some poplin too. I think they are in.

You do still see them at higher end dept stores, so I do think that you can get another year out of them. I look at it this way, I am a seamstress, when they go out of style I can usually take them off.

Oh please, who do they think they are declaring ruffles or any other type of fabric manipulation or adornment to be taboo? It's like that "what's in, what's out" page in the Bazaar magazine, a page that often contradicts what is declared (un)fashionable on other pages of the very same magazine.

I definitely agree. Although I think it's good to balance it a bit. I wouldn't want to be the gal who's known for walking around in bright blue polyester crepe suits with big shoulders. But nor would I want to be known as a slave to fashion. (Not much chance of either, lol)

Maybe... although even saying the word "ruffles" seemed to be making them gag. That's what really struck me -- they were SO negative. The ruffles on that dress were not nearly as OTT as some I've seen -- they were just way too much for day wear... or that was my reaction, anyway.

I'm so curious about this. Do they get in trouble for copying? why can't they put out RTW? I would love it if they did. (because i'm not very original-i just copy
)

Not only can pattern companies issue RTW, they do issue RTW. Just look at all the Vogue patterns from name designers like Anne Klein, Badgley Mischka, Donna Karan, etc. Granted there is a time lag of a couple of years, but if these patterns don't qualify as RTW, nothing does.
