I am finishing up my daughter's wedding dress and am using some very beautiful, but expensive Alencon lace, which will be overlayed on an A-line style silk satin skirt. I've been avoiding cutting into it because I don't want to make any mistakes. I've read and re-read Susan Khalje's book and I'm wondering if it is acceptable to put simple straight seamlines at the side seams. I don't think I purchased enough fabric to allow for the extra necessary to do lace overlap-style seams on both sides since the motifs are quite large.

I think it is pretty important to applique the seams. You might be able to piece together your scraps to make up enough extra fabric to complete the skirt. I once had to do this for a prom dress made from Chantilly. I zigzagged the pieces together and patched up enough to make a full length gown out of barely three yards of 30" lace. The margins were barely visible. Lace can be very forgiving that way. Good luck.

I thought that was going to be the case. I've read that if the cording is cut on Alencon lace, it's difficult to get it to stop unraveling? There are a few motifs that I know the cords will need to be cut on -- are there tricks to prevent this or does anyone have experience to the contrary?

I think I'd reinforce those areas before cutting. Maybe with some stitching or you could test some sort of Fray Stop type liquids.
