Very, very thin and sheer (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

I ordered two Fabric.com rayon knit prints (gray stars and one of the crosshatched plaid designs). Oh my, are they ever thin! Not only are they sheer, but two layers together are still sheer. I thought of returning them, then decided to try a Simplicity cardi wrap with the gray stars. I've been working on it today and I am not sold on this fabric. It is drapey, that's true, but it is just so insubstantial that I am not sure I will ever wear the garment. Luckily I only ordered 1.5 yards and managed to get the shorter length cardi out of that.
I thought many of the prints were very pretty. You might differ in your opinion about the usefulness of this very lightweight fabric, but I thought I should let others know that it is definitely too light and sheer for tshirts.

I ordered some of the brown "chains" print a couple of weeks ago and returned it (along with another sub-par fabric). It was thin, and looked like it had already been washed about 300 times. My stash doesn't need stuffing with inferior fabrics. I usually have good luck with Fabric.com so this won't stop me from ordering again. And again. Plus, they paid for the return shipping.

Thanks for letting us know about the nature of this fabric. I hope you let fabric.com know that their description of "lightweight" is inaccurate and it should read "sheer" instead.
I have always found the people at fabric.com to be very helpful and they might appreciate your feedback on this.

Debbie and LinCee, you are both so right that Fabric.com does a great job and seems to want to make their customers happy. I think I will return the one I did not sew up today. When I request the return I will give feedback about the description of this knit. It seems almost silly to return that one little cut of fabric, but it will bug me if it just hangs around and isn't useful.
So, not knocking fabric.com at all, just thought that if someone was considering this fabric they might want to take the weight "under advisement."

I have a similar issue with the printed stretch jersey knit. It's very, very thin. Though I love the print, it is not at all what I thought it would be.

I too bought some and was disappointed with it. But, being from Canada with all the shipping hassle, I decided to keep it and use it as a muslin for a few patterns that I would like to draft. It was pretty inexpensive. It is too bad though, I love the print.

Hey - if you really love the print you could try to underline with a knit lining in your skin color.

Fabric.com also has some of the Vera Wang stretch luxe jersey in nude, which would be perfect for lining knit garments. It is really cheap right now (it's on clearance) and they are running an extra 20% off of clearance, too.

I have noticed an awful lot of these thin rayon knit prints in the RTW stores, where they are made up into very loose drapey tops. They are designed to be worn over something else, usually a plain top of more substantial weight. A layering piece.
Just a suggestion for anyone who likes the print enough and wants to use it for a real garment. It's always disappointing when a fabric isn't what we anticipate. One of the disadvantages of shopping on-line.

Thanks for the suggestions about lining the knits. I wasn't that in love with them (on the occasions I've lined knits to make them opaque, I've found that the stretch of the combined fabrics is difficult to predict), so I requested a return. Fabric.com was great about it, and I did provide feedback about the description.
