Hi,

I am planning to make a simple a-line skirt for my mother. I have drafted many a pattern for this kind of skirt, and I've never had an issue. A-line skirts are the only thing I can make consistently well! The problem is that my mother's hips are actually about 1" smaller than her waist, which is a problem I've never encountered. How would I go about making the pattern? Would I just use the waist measurement as is and omit any dart allowance?

Many thanks in advance.

Is your mom's waistline as wide as the hips, or simply deeper? If the former, you would cut straight up from the widest part of the hips and might still need a dart in the back, depending. If the latter, eliminating the darts might still not be enough, you may have to alter the pattern for a prominent belly.

Hi,

Yes, the waist and hips are basically the same width. She is basically "rectangular" with just a bit of a belly, which accounts for the 1" difference.
