I've seen lots of tights this year being worn as pants (?) and under skirts but am on the fence about the Spring. Do you think they will be in fashion? It would be nice to make some to wear under skirts in the cooler months but I'm afraid being over 20 (ha, ha) I am diluting myself into thinking this is something I should sew. What are the thoughts and opinions about this? Honestly, you won't hurt my feelings. With age has come hardening of many things

I think it all depends on the skirt and how you put together the whole outfit. It can be a wonderful look.

There are some funny thoughts about tights in this thread from November Tights as Outerwear

This might not be the response you were looking for, but personally, I believe that whatever's fashionable is whatever looks good on you.

Meaning, if you can look good and FEEL good (I'd not be able to ~ two word: "Thunder thighs" ~ 'nuff said), then I say GO FOR IT.

IMO, fashion ~ and being fashionable ~ is all about confidence. Strut your stuff and be proud of how you look and how you feel!!!

Do you mean leggings? (thicker, no feet) If so, then, yes, they are and have been in style. You can wear them under skirts and dresses and with tunic tops that are at least mid-thigh length. Unless you're pretty young, it's best to stick with black or other dark neutrals as opposed to bright colors.

I don't know that I'd mess with sewing them, though, you can get them for $5 and I'm not sure you could get the fabric for less than that.

See, I don't even know what to call them. Yes, leggings... oops. I don't know if my cottage cheese could be contained adequately in these things but I find them so cute with a skirt. I'm just afraid I'll be strutting my stuff thinking I'm so cool and people will be thinking I've lost my mind. (This may not be the first time this has happened though...)

I wore them many years ago in white but now, there is no way that's happening. Maybe if I start running a lot more?! Nah, not happening

*snort*

I think you're falling into the whole "supermodel syndrome" ~ AKA, if you're not *exactly* Heidi Klum's twin, you're not gorgeous!!

I think if you were thinking you *could* "get away" with the leggings + skirt look, I think you *can* "get away" with it.

Like me, I *know* I could *never* "get away" with it. No. Way. I can't even wrap my mind around it. But then, that's because I've got a patootie like the side of a skyscraper and the thighs to match.

Know what I mean? The people who absolutely *can't* get away with it, *know* they can't get away with it. The people that *can* think about it!!! :)

Run out to Wal-mart, grab a $5 pair and try them out under one of the skirts you already wear. If you're already comfortable with the length of the skirt, how are you any less covered than you were before? It's a cute look and as long as you keep the rest of the outfit age-appropriate (if you don't *feel* like you're trying to look like a teenager when you look in the mirror, you're probably fine), you'll look great!

last spring I saw lots of knee length leggings or capris peeking under just above the knee dirndle skirts..it looked adorable.

i think you need to practice the look in front of a mirrir and see if it works...lately I have been seeing tights as leggings..not exactly the best look even for the young and skinny thighed.

I think that in the next couple of seasons the dust will settle a bit about what works and what does not..I also saw lots of tights under short daisy dukes during the heat of the summer which seems dumb in the NYC humidity

Tights/leggings with short skirts have been around for at least a couple of years now. I'd say, if you're thinking about trying it, just go for it! The trend seems to have stuck around for a while now - hopefully it won't fade out too quickly. But then again, don't invest too much money into a whole wardrobe of tights..just in case they are passé by fall! But I think for most of us who don't live in NY or LA, trends don't really come and go that quickly.

On the practical side, tights are quite appropriate for transitioning from winter to spring while the weather can still be cool and unpredictable. You can wear some of your spring skirts sooner, so it will open up some more options in your wardrobe. Definitely try them out with your skirts before you go out in them. You might find some skirts will stick to the tights - cottons in particular are bad for this. It's not static - I think it's just the friction of the fabric. So, a slip or slippery lining might be necessary.

I have to weigh in with a resounding NO to tights or leggings worn as pants, at any age! It even looks bad on very fit 20 year olds. Your butt should be covered by a skirt, shorts, or long tunic or you'll just look like you went running out of the house half dressed! I suppose that matter is fully discussed in the Tights as Outerwear thread, though.
