Hi I ran across this website on AmericaSews they show the different things and some of them are good. The lady the owns the site I showed the correct height for cutting, sewing and ironing. I was really cool especially if you have aches and pains from sewing.

I don't think I could sew on that ergo-ball, but I've seriously been thinking about it for a computer "chair." Would either seriously cut down on my time here or improve my posture and trim up my waistline -- or maybe both.

This topic couldn't be more timely. I've decided that my cutting table is too low, so I'm test driving different heights by propping it up on blocks of wood. I couldn't find it on the cool ergosew website: high should your cutting table be? (I'm 5'7" but often wear my big thick soled shoes when I'm at my cutting table, so closer to 5'9" shod).
I have an exercise ball that I have used as my desk and sewing table chair. It's surprisingly comfortable and easy to sit on, although I did have to work up to being able to sit on it all day. The thing I'm struggling with is that it gets really cold! I've tried putting a towel on it, even resorted to a heating pad.

I'm about 5'3" and my cutting table is a computer table on cement blocks. It has made sewing much easier -- now I'm thinking about making an pressing table the same height rather than using an ironing board.
I'm planning to spend some time on this site later -- thank's for sharing it.

As for the height of a cutting table it should be the the ball joint in the hip if you measure from you hip ball joint to the floor that is the height it should be. ( Or so that is what they were saying).
When cutting you need to keep you elbow close to your rib cage.

When I was in my young mom years and sewing even more than I do now (HOW? I wonder -- maybe more energy?) anyway -- my then hubby built me a cutting table at the same height as I kept my ironing board. I think that's a bit higher than my hip ball joint, but I liked it. Just feeling it out, I think the lower height still makes me bend over a bit.

Linda and Els, thank you both for the links to these great sites. I'm going to order the shoulder posture strap, even though they do tell you that it's uncomfortable to wear. I have developed this very painful condition called costochondritis (I think, but that doesn't sound right). It's an inflamation of the tiny chondrital joints down the center of your chest wall. I've had it since last December. It is agrivated by hunching over my sewing machine day in and day out. I believe it is actually caused by my posture while sewing. There are other causes of this, but usually it heals itself in time, and mine has not gone away. I'm anxious to get this strap and I'll let you know how it works.
BTW, do any of you have this condition? I would be interested in knowing if it is caused by my sewing.
Leslie, your ergonomic ball with the heating pad on it at your sewing machine hit my funny bone! LOL! It's exactly what I thought of when I looked at the photo of the woman sitting at her sewing table. My sewing room has wood floors and the room has no insulation in the flooring. It is soooo cold in the winter. I would have to have a heating pad for sure!
