We have 80's soft rose/salmon countertops in our master bath. We are not going to fully renovate for goodness knows how many years, but we are having to replace the sink right now and since the sink is out, this would be the obvious time to retop the counter in some way. They have some cool looking granite and other stone finishes out there and it might be fun to try if it is inexpensive and not ridiculously hard to do. Any experience? Or should I just find out how much a new laminate top done by the pros would be?

Lowes has a kit for doing this and the samples looked very nice (they all looked like marble). I can't recall the name of the product, but I'm sure if you asked they'd be able to help you. It was exclusive to Lowes.

I looked at the rehab kit at Lowes ... and opted to buy good looking formica countertops. The cost of the kit was about 1/2 the cost of nice looking formica that looks like granite.

Tourist, I am not quite sure there is even a Lowes where you are at.. but have you considered just tiling over the existing countertop for now.. Tile comes in all price ranges and a small area like a countertop may be very affordable. Hope this helps..

Yes, we have Lowes. I know I have looked this up a few times and just never did it. It is a pretty big counter top in the main bath and time wise, tiles would end up taking just as long. The big question is how long DH and I can share the miniature en suite while we get this done!

Tourist, you can buy counter top lengths at Rona or Home Deport, they are not really expensive. It is unlikely that your new sink will fit in the old hole, so instead of re-cutting then painting the old counter top, buy a new one.

We eventually will be redoing our kitchen, but in order to put in a dishwasher a few years ago, we have to replace one section of the counters. I think the counter top was about $90.00. It looks good, did not break the bank, and when we redo the entire room, I will not feel that we have to keep it.

Considering the cost of paint and the additional time it will take the cure, I would go check out the premade counter tops.

Sorry if I am wrong, but your question is has anyone used the products to paint a countertop and what what the result. I am curious too. How did it look? How did it wear?

I confess. I did do that once.. Which is why I suggested tile this time
Had a lot of brushmarks,, so went over with a different applicator.. but in the end..no matter what I did. it looked like a painted countertop, not good . And of course being paint or a paint product, that result really did not improve over time and cleaning.
I really feel that product is just a waste of time and money.

We've used a specialty contractor to do this at my work. I don't recommend it for a kitchen because it doesn't seem to stand up to the heat all that well. We have metal edges on our countertops (70s era!) and the contractor paints those too and the paint seems to chip off that pretty easily. I think it looks good enough and is fairly cheap to have done.

Thank, PP ... that's good to know since I'd thought about doing that this summer. DH just won't flip for new countertops since he's planning a big DIY backyard makeover this summer (wonder how many times I'll have to have 911 on speed dial?!). :/

Ours are those REALLY heinous 60s things (even though the house was built in the late 80s). Gross. With a white enamel sink that stains and looks oogie if you just think at it too hard.

I found oodles of sites that discuss those pour on resin redos ~ that was what I was hoping to try. I've seen pics that looked great ... but of course, I've seen pics that looked BAD.

And even then, IIRC, you can't put anything hot on it or the surface will melt. :(

Guess I'll be waiting til next summer for my projects. :/
