... to keep Fido away from those "Firestarter" sticks, charcoal (especially the kind saturated with lighter fluid) and other fire-starting aids!!
I dunno about you guys, but I really didn't think that those Firestarter sticks or charcoal would be attractive to an animal. But apparently they are.
Tank, our 6 month old puppy, had to be rushed to the vet last night because the bone-head decided that Firestarter sticks looked nummy enough to eat. Their being packaged and unopened didn't stop him from chewing through the package and taking a large bite out of it.
So, we take him to the vet, and we find out that although we were lucky this time ~ the DuraFlame brand we used has very little lighter fluid in it ~ pets can suffer extreme liver damage from ingesting lighter fluid products, limiting their life spans greatly.
Except for a little indigestion, you might never know, until it's time to fire up the grill, that Fido had a snack.
So, for Tank, he's on laxative ~ the DuraFlame consists mostly of wood fibers, so that needs to come out .... uh, smoothly. And in the next day or so, he's going to give birth to a digested tree. Not so much fun for my poor baby.
So, please: keep charcoal, lighter fluid, fire-starter aids, etc out of the reach of pets!!!

Good to know! We have a gas grill, but our current dog is a ground Hoover. She'll eat anything.

Very timely post! I have a fireplace and bought some of those firestarter sticks this winter, and my dog Ginger was immediately drawn to them!!! I kept them out of her reach, only because I knew they were wood chips, and I didn't want her to eat that! I had no idea they had lighter fluid embedded in them. I'm glad now that I followed my gut instinct and moved them up high where she couldn't get at them. I was trying to avoid a mess, but instead avoided her getting sick!

Amazing what an animal will eat. My kitty is at the vet right now recovering from surgery this morning. He has an appetite for the elastic hair bands that my daughters use. 20 of those were removed from his stomach!
