As I sit here there is a really interesting program on CBC Radio on Lace Making in India.

Apparently almost all the handmade bobbin lace still made is made in India. Apparently most Belgium Lace is made in India.

I could not find a link to a podcast of the show, but it may show up later at The Sunday Edition

When I lived in Europe, I visited Belgium quite often...especially the head Godiva store...but that`s off-topic.

What I remember -and now regret not snapping a bunch up- were all the tiny little shops packed withall the various wooden lace-making bobbins and shuttles and other tools. I kept thinking `next time`.

Lost opportunities.

I'll be looking forward to finding the podcast!

I lived in Sweden and at one of the second hand shops there I found this - complete with a couple of samples of lace and one in the works:

Hello:
I also heard the CBC show. I searched and found a website for the lace makers:

http://www.dangelohome.com

I found this extremely interesting as we were in Bruges, Belgium a few weeks ago and visited the lace museum and saw a workshop on lacemaking. The older ladies were so fast. Even my husband found it facinating. There was a shop there and we bought a few pieces for around 30 euros each. The shops there were full of cheaper, machine-made, chinese pieces. I am glad to hear of it being done the traditional way in India.

OK, that's weird -- on that page it says two different things about hour 1:

Quote:
Sunday, May 23th
Hour One: This temple town in India's southern tip is perhaps the last place on earth where lace is made by hand. We'll have a documentary for you about the lace makers of Cape Comorin.

May 23, 2010: Rugby, Diego Matamoros, Bernhard Schlink
Hour 1: Can Gareth Thomas really be the world's ONLY gay rugby player? - Rugby is the world's most macho sport, and Gareth Thomas has come out of the closet.

I just listened to the first couple of minutes of the first podcast, and it's about the second "hour 1" -- Gareth Thomas.
