And they have been borrowing it now for about 6 months. Anyway, I'm wanting to get it back. I'm just wondering if anyone has any good ideas for how to ask for it back? I don't think she'll
be cranky, but I know she likes it and I know she has plenty
of money to buy a $100 sewing machine if she really wants one.
Thanks for any advice!!

How about.. I need my sewing machine back and I will be coming over today after it.
Jiily, if she really loves that one , you could also offer to let her buy that one, and get you a new one.. so its full price or she could just go get her own. My DH is like that. hates to shop.. just refuses to go buy anything. So, I have learned, if he borrows something from me.. to go to the store my next outing out and buy another one. We refer to it around here as a permanent loan to Dad.
We also keep a lot of things locked up around here.. sad.. but necessary .. Its kinda like he does his shopping at home.. but not the HSN you know.. lol
From experience I can tell you.. do not let her put you off even a day.. or she will find ways to extend it forever.. Just put it honestly and bluntly to her. Either give me back my machine..or give me the money to go get me a new one.
Hmmm.. reminds me of that thread we had about Would you loan your machine out . IF I recall correctly , most everyone said NO.

Hee, well I believe I offered to let her borrow it and I'm sure If I ask her she'll let me have it back. But yes, lesson learned.
I won't be letting
anyone borrow it again. Especially the hello kitty machine.
I'll just tell her the kids need it for the summer so they can sew. And they probably will use it. She has a nice house and fancy handbags and such so as I said I'm sure if she really wants a machine she can afford to buy one.
So funny about your DH.

Go the route pigling said - I WANT IT BACK and I am coming for it. My rule - never lend irons, sewing machines, or other appliances. People can buy their own. For some reason (they bought clothes and not necessities) when I was young and in nursing school, everyone wanted to borrow my iron and my typewriter. I had a very small monthly income - and I mean small - my parents sent me $20 a month for expenses. We hadn't much money. The girls wanting to borrow my stuff were all pretty well to do. I never loaned, and I always had my stuff when I needed it. I find lots of folks are borrowers and then they have no idea of returning. Just note the stats on non-returned library books.

That borrow and never return type.. my neighbor is that exactly.. so now when she comes to borrow I tell her Sorry, my MIL has already borrowed it.. and also remark how irritating it is when people don't return things so I can loan them out to someone else.. Doubt she gets that message though.. she is now on my DO NOT LOAN list.
Jilly, my DH.. that could be your answer.. perhaps your friend does not feel the confidence to shop for her own machine. Perhaps you could offer to go with her to the store to look at the sewing machines to help her choose her own..

I've become very open with my no lending rule, too. I'm glad I got in the habit of it before I got into sewing - I couldn't bear to miss any of my sewing things.
I became vocal with my rule when I was into cake decorating. I would loan out things that weren't necessarily of much value but either cost more because of shipping or were now discontinued. Then they did become more valuable. I recently refused to loan out a decorating tip that is only $1.69 but has $7 shipping. I tell friends that they can come over to my house to use my cake tools but they're not leaving my home.So my point, don't be afraid to say no. It is yours, after all. And I personally find that it's usually those who are financially able to buy their own that are the ones who want to borrow. (Disclaimer: That is my personal experience and in no way am I saying that is true of anyone else.)

Subtlety works with some people, but not others. I'm with the
I want my machine back and I'm coming over today to get it
crowd. It will do you some good too, just getting yourself to say it, I'll bet.

My vote is to call and say, I need teh machine Tuesday. If you get into a discussion and don't want to simply tell her it is time to return the machine, you can always tell her it is time for Hello Kitty to be serviced so she is ready for your kids to use.
Whatever you choose to say, give a time specific and be there to pick it up.
Bottom line, some items are not loanable. We all have to decide which ones are which.
