fabric shopping in Bangkok (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

I'm going on a business trip to Bangkok later this month and will have a couple of days to mill around a bit; after I visit a few palaces (hopefully), I'd like to shop for fabrics in particular. Does anyone know if Bangkok has good fabric shopping?

Yes. Pick up a current Frommer's Guide to Thailand.
When I was there many years ago (early 90's) there was a Cloth Market in the alleyways and some very nice shops with fabric too like the Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company.
The Gold Market was near the cloth market. Go there to see fabulous gold jewelry sold by the gram.
The weekend market in Chatuchak Park is fun too. I think I bought fabric there but there is lots to look at including live chickens, knock off clothes and tiny fruit made from clay, etc.

We were in Bangkok a few years ago and found lovely designer fabrics near the elevated train by the Aiyara (elephant) shrine in Bangkok [near the 4 Seasons Hotel]. Not inexpensive but fun to look at. I found more fun things to buy in the India Market area, near the Flower market. I was sent there by some ex-pats. However, with all the upheaval in Bangkok recently, I would rely on someone with more recent experience. One of the 'malls' where we found local designed clothing and goods was burned in the recent rioting. Do report back when you return and have a lovely trip.

Hi
I'll arrive in Bkk July 22 as well.
Check out "pahurat market" from google.

Beware of pickpocket activity there. This place is packed full of
people, very hot and sweaty but FUN.
You will find that buttons price in USA is insane. They are much
cheaper there. What I want to buy but do not to carry back is the tool
to make fabric covered button. I think it costs somewhere 1800 Baht.
