I am considering using some nice silk thread to top stitch or maybe chain stitch on the CS, which makes a nice top stitching. The thread is quite thin, so I would test it first to check tensions, but as I have a limited amount, wondered if I can use cotton or serger thread for the bottom thread?

I use serger thread in the looper on my cs regardless of what's in the needles. I'd just try it. My cs only takes 705 needles the largest available is a size 14 so I'd have trouble using a large thread. If you can get it threaded and it doesn't shred you should be able to adjust the tensions for it to work.
