Anyone have an Android phone? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 7/5/10 1:51 PM ET
And are there any sewing related apps? Like pattern organizing?
Anything interesting?
I'm T-Mo, so the iPhone is out for me. Buying one and then having it "unlocked" is too ... stressful. We did that with DD's AT&T Blackberry phone and the process durn nigh killed me!!
Any comments, advice, or suggestions much appreciated! Thank you!!

I have no idea if it has any sewing related aps, but my parents just recently got them, since my dad can no longer adequately make his traditional "phones are not computers" speech, since, er, yea, now they are.
But if there's nobody around to be shocked by bad language, you have seen the iphone video, right? http://techdirt.com/articles/20100702/03200710058.shtml

The Samsung Vibrant is going to be out for t-mobile later this month, and it will be their most advanced Android phone (it's the same as the galaxy s/epic that's coming out for Verizon). The current t-mobile Android lineup is all previous generation phones (in comparison to the iphone 4 or the Droid Incredible or the sprint EVO).

OMGosh!! So {insert language most used in that video here} FUNNY!!!
Yannow, I'm a mega-super-dee-dooper Mac fan. I love my Mac. If it was legal, I'd marry it. But (disclaimer), I don't want an iPhone!! And the near lunatic behavior I've seen some of my friends display over the iPhone just ... makes me scratch my head.
So, of course, that vid made my day!
Mainly, though, it's because we came from AT&T years ago. And in my area at least, the reception was SO crappy that it *was* like having a brick. So, even if AT&T began giving iPhones away (just to get you to switch to their network), I'd have to pass!
Thank you for that link!!!
I'm thinking of getting the Garmin phone. I love to drive all over creation in search of cool vintage SMs, so a GPS enabled phone (meaning, the kind that will give you directions and such) would be AWESOME! I've got a GPS for my car, but it sucks rocks.
Do your parents like their Android enabled phones?

The Garmin Garminfone is what I'm looking at right now. I really like that it has real-time, no hassle street directions built in.
BUT, I'm open for anything ~ so I'm gonna check out the Vibrant. We're renewing our contract with them, so I'm hoping to get a good deal. I can get the Garminfone for $100, $50/down, with a 2 year contract renewal.
Usually, I'm *massively* cheap on myself ~ being a "reformed" tech-head-geek. But, the thought of being able to run around looking at vintage SMs via Craigslist AND know where I'm going? Yeah. I'll spoil myself for THAT!!!
{Have a GPS, but it REALLY sucks ...}
Thanks for the tip, Andreva!!

Yea, I think they like them.. although they hadn't done anything with phones except talk until getting the droids, so it's not like they've got much to compare them to. Until a few months ago, they'd never done anything with a phone that they hadn't been able to do with the first one they got in the '90s! (Well, okay, my dad hacked a few phones to unlock them, but only for the purpose of changing networks. They didn't *use* them as anything except phones.)
Honestly, I touch-type, so if it doesn't have at least a nearly full-sized keyboard, the value as a computer seems pretty limited to me. Mobile access for netbooks seems more practical to me than the phone/computer combos. (Well, I suppose that netbooks with cell capabilities are combination phone/computers, but from the other direction, computers with a built in phone rather than the other way around.) I guess they need to be teeny-tiny for guys to carry them, but anything small enough to fit in my purse is as small as I could really need it to be.
Don't pretty much all phones have GPS capabilities? Not necessarily programmed to be used that way, but I think any phone made within the last ten years or so can be tracked via gps-- otherwise calling 911 on a cell would be really unreliable, especially in areas like SOMD where if the closest cell tower is unavailable, your call will be going through towers in VA..

Technically, they don't all have GPS, and 911 locations can be found by triangulation from cell towers. I work with e911...
DH has one of the phones that Google was selling directly. I'd have one, too, if they didn't cost $500! IMHO, the Android apps are far more helpful than Apple's. I have no desire to make a phone purr like a kitten... My fave Android apps - you can take a picture of something and it will find matching images and give you info about that. Want to know what that flower is? Where to find the kind of jam you had in that restaurant? That's fun. Also, there is an app that you point the camera around and it will name all the stores it sees, tell you how far away you are, etc. And you can get 'walking' directions, it will guide you wherever you want! Never get lost in a mall again!

But what about SEWING RELATED apps for Droid? I am thinking of getting a Droid but I have an iPod Touch and I have several apps on it that are really cool sewing/quilting related. One is a quilting app. You scroll through pattern blocks till you find one you want. It them will calculate what you need to cut--according to the size block you pick! Cool! Go to the Ipod app store and look at Quilt Fab and Block Tool. I also have Pattern Pal and Fabric Stash plus Yardage Calc.
So are there any apps like these for Droid? If so, I am SO THERE! I want one and I want to be able to access stuff all the time. With my iPod Touch, I have to hit a wifi spot to use some apps like Facebook etc!

DH and I got the Verizon Moto Droid (posted about that here a couple weeks ago).
The thing about the Droids is that there are approx. 10,000 Apps to search thru, so finding a sewing-related app is literally like finding a needle in a haystack. Sure, the Apps are more or less categorized, but that's still thousands to scroll thru to hunt for and I don't have time.
This phone also has Google GPS/Navigation that works pretty well. The down side is that it gobbles up battery juice, so you need to plug it into the car charger while using the Navigation.
I'm getting used to the phone. Some things are easy to master. I love the text-messaging... never had that before... and web connection when I'm stuck somewhere and have to kill 10 - 30 minutes. I can read PR on my Droid! WooHoooooooo!!!
But, , , I miss the ease of using a flip phone. It's a lot more complicated to answer one of these type phones, compared to opening the flip phone and saying "hello".
Sometimes simplicity is nice.
