making home made pickles (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

A question for anybody that makes home made crock dill pickles. I've made them before and sometimes with a lot of success and sometimes not. In the past I boiled the water and poured it over the cukes and seasonings while hot but did some research on line and see that many recipes do not call for the water to be boiled. I'm not planning to "can" them just would rather do small batches at a time and replenish them as they get eaten. I do keep them in the fridge after they are pickled.
Sugestions from successful picklers is appreciated
Thanks

Yes, I would like to know and add a question. I pickled mine once and they were not crisp. What happened? My cucumbers are really growing strong right now!

I am bumping this up in hopes that the princess of pickle relish comes along. Ms. Fairchild. Or perhaps the queen of pickled okra.. Melinda in Tulsa.
Bet you could goggle this info too...
PS.. Valerie.. you know ...and I know... you are suppose to be making bags... lol

I've only done one batch....added "pickle crisp" to the jars before adding the pickling liquid...hot water canning. Hubby and DD loved them as soon as they were done, DS just tried the 2nd jar, and he's not a pickle person, but loved them.
not sure if that helps

Thanks for your response. I think you did your pickles more like actual canning. I want to make the old fashioned crock pickles that are just in an open pottery crock. I have made them several times in the past but am always looking to tweek them to perfection
I want to make the first batch today. I guess I'll go with boiling water and if I'm not happy batch number 2 will be tried with cold water. In any case they are always edible.

Maybe you should take a break from making bags and try to pickle some pickles
It is fun AND they'd make a great snack to take into the chat room too

pickle crisp, made by Ball, helps keep the pickles crunchy instead of allowing them to get soft and "floppy"
not crockpot, but crock...made kind of like kraut, I believe...with a weight down on top of them to keep them in the brine
