I always struggle with selecting the correct knits online, and my local fabric stores, terrific though they are, have a really limited selection at the moment.

Can anyone make some recommendations for these tops? For the first one, I definitely want to get a stripe, though it doesn't have to match the photo as long as it is in neutral colors (black, navy, white gray, tan etc).

This is the second pattern, I would like a solid for this, gray or white would be nice. I just don't know what weight of knit or type would be right.

Oh, and lastly, I would love for just some nice white t-shirt material, not the tissue-t fabric, but just a nice knit that is not transparent.

I would recommend looking at Emma One Sock and Gorgeous Fabrics. Both have good descriptions of their fabrics, including what kind of garments they might be most suitable for, and also very helpful owners (respectively, Linda and Ann). I have only ordered from Gorgeous Fabrics twice so I'm less familiar with it, I'm sure both Ann and Linda would be happy to answer any questions that you had about their fabrics. EOS has wonderful rayon knits that would be perfect for any of those patterns, and Linda will send you free swatches. EOS is not cheap but the quality is really great; I am a total addict and spend way more money there than I should. Look out for roll ends at EOS, which are perfect for projects like those tank tops that need a yard or less.

I too recommend Emmaonesock, my favorite purveyor of fine knits, but for the stripes I'd check out Marcy Tilton's site. She has had a lot of knit stripes and she has good quality too.

I think the grey top would work well in a cotton lycra jersey. Spandex World has a nice weight for tops in their 6oz. Here is one in dark gray heather and one in light gray heather. They send out free samples so you can see the real thing. A rayon jersey would work well too, but not spandex world's, theirs is a poly blend. Something from Emma One Sock, she has good rayon lycras.

The striped top could be done in a cotton jersey or cotton interlock. If you want stripes please let me send you the three yard cut I have from Near Sea Naturals. It is a black and light bluish grey stripe in a tubular knit organic cotton, very nice. Free, I'll pay shipping. Seriously. I don't like stripes and I'm leaping at a chance to send this fabric far away! Send me a PM (private message) if you are interested.

I'll second (or is it third) the suggestion of Gorgeous Fabrics. Ann is fantastic, and she has some great prices on very nice knits. Right now, I think she has some rayon and cotton solids in some lovely colors.

I like EOS too, but it is a splurge site for me. I find the prices there much higher.

Also, take a look at Marcy Tilton's knits -- she has some great ones and seems to find good stripes too.
