where to buy at best price? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

I know nothing about dolls, having had a son who is now 28 y/o. I am asking for a friend...... is there a place to get American Girl dolls at a discount (below MSRP)? Sam's Club, Costco, internet vendors?

I don't know anything about buying them anywhere but through the magazine that AG sends out. I wanted to get DGD one but decided to test the waters. DGD is too grown up for her own good at 6-1/2 years. She plays with Barbies but not the real ones. She goes online and dresses them on a website -- that she found herself. I bought her a doll that is the same size as AG for Christmas. DD says she put on the nightgown that her other grandmother bought her (came with a nightgown for DGD) and it resides at the foot of her bed -- all the time. Glad I only spent $25 and didn't order the real thing. Some girls at church carry around AG dolls all the time, but I guess my granddaughter is not one of those. Oh, well.

Two of my DDs played with AG; we still get the catalogues. The only place you could ever buy them is from the dealer or in an AG store. Of course, there are fake ones, and DDs had those for ''sisters, cousins, friends'' of the real deal. Just like adults, children grow to quickly differentiate between genuine and knock-off. And I have to admit, the genuine AG was better made.

To the best of my knowledge the only place to get the genuine American Girl Doll is through their online site or their stores. I own two of the dolls and one of my granddaughters has one too and I've been very impressed with the quality of the dolls. You get your money's worth, imo.

They have very cleverly covered the market. You can get them at their stores or through their catalogues- period. No discounts, no sales, just pure hype.
My granddaughter has 5 (
) that she has received as gifts or bought with birthday money. The dolls are good qualtiy although over priced. The clothing is a major rip off; some outfits cost more than I'd spend for myself!
I'm afraid your friend won't find any discounts- unless you get lucky on Ebay.

There are a ton of patterns out there for making AG clothes. This is one of my goals in life: to someday have a DGD I can make doll clothes for!

I've never seen one discounted, but you might check Craig's list for a used one. Madame Alexander makes one the same size for less $ that I've seen at Tuesday Morning and Walmart.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

You might try eBay.

Making doll clothes while teaching my DGD to sew is what prompted me to get a couple of the dolls. There are dozens of adorable patterns available so when the pattern sales are on, I stock up!
I'm enjoying sewing for this size doll a LOT more than I did Barbies when my DD was a kid! You can go blind making Barbie clothes!
One good thing about American Girl Dolls is that if they're taken care of they hold their value. And by ''taking care'' I don't mean not using or playing with them -- even gently used, they still hold their value. There are several ''retired'' dolls that are now worth quite a bit more than they originally sold for.

I'm like PegL - well worth the money and I have one of my very own as well. These were new when my girls were little and one of my DD's has three of them. She was quite shocked when some women she worked with said they would never spend that much $$$ on a doll. DD called and told me "I'm so glad you didn't feel that way because they were my favorite toys as a child". We had fun making clothes, etc for them and the doll usually had dresses that matched the DDs. BTW, the same Christmas my DDs got their dolls, DS got some kind of game system that cost the same $$$. You know how long that hung around before it was replaced:)
We still have all the dolls and their "stuff"!
